Washington, Missouri is a small town in the US state of Missouri. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is located in Clay County on the I-70 Corridor north of Springfield. The town was founded in 1836 by Colonel George Washington and his wife Virginia, as part of the retrocession of land from Louisiana to the United States. Washington had been governor of what is now St. Louis County since 1824 and had wanted to annex what is now Washington Township into his larger county. The townsite was chosen for its proximity to an existing stream, which would provide water for farming activities and also provide defense against Native American attacks. Washington's first store opened in 1840 and he started trading goods with Native Americans along the streams that run through his township. By 1850, Washington had built a large brick courthouse that served as a center for local government and commerce until it burned down in 1871 during a Union military campaign against Confederate forces near Springfield. In 1872, Washington purchased 7 miles (11 km) of railroad between Marshalltown and Joplin so that he could sell goods directly to residents inside Missouri rather than having them shipped overland from Illinois or Kentucky. This allowed him to become one of the largest traders and suppliers within Missouri before World War II when interstate transportation became more common. In 1941, due to post-World War II restrictions on exports, Washington closed its stores all together but reopened them some years later as part of efforts by locals to revive their economy following economicosteries such as high taxes levied by Jefferson City government after World War II ruined many families' businesses locally). Washington, Missouri was settled in 1836 by westerners looking for a new home. The town's name comes from the first white settlers, Washington and his party of fur traders. After years of growth and prosperity for Washington County, tensions began to increase between its black residents and white people in the early 20th century. This tension led to several race riots throughout Missouri over such issues as education reform or job discrimination. However, these episodes are little remembered today relative to more famous events associated with Washington County such as Lewis & Clark Expedition or World's Columbian Exposition (1893). In 1920s-1930s there were numerous strikes against local government jobs in Washburne Ladd's growing agricultural industry. One significant event that took place during this time was when workers at Washingtons farm Union Pacific Railroad walked off their job on September 30th 1930 after not getting paychecks for six weeks straight As part of an agreement reached following this strike many workers received backpay plus benefits including medical care and vacation days These struggles eventually led to passage of state law legalizing unions in 1935 which helped improve working conditions for local government employees across Missouri In recent decades some efforts have been made to redevelop old agricultural warehouses into mixed-use developments while others have focused on restoration projects specific to Washburne Ladd . overall it can be said that while there have been some challenges faced by residents since 1940s many aspects of life continue relatively unchanged within Washburne Township
