In 1847 Columbus Coffee Company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, which became one of the earliest American roasters of coffee. This company produced both ground coffee and iced coffees, making it one of the most popular brands in America at this point. By 1861 Coffee House & Café had become one of the largest commercial venues for espresso in North America with locations throughout Boston, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and more. During this time period cafés served a variety of different types of drinks including tepals (a type of Colombian chocolate), chocolates (made with milk chocolate or dark chocolate)and pastries like croissants or donuts. These pioneers took note of the quality and flavor of ancient Ethiopian Harrar Arabica coffee beans they had acquired while exploring Java island. They began to roast their own beans, adding oil or butter touckles before packaging them into small baskets for shipment back to Holland. The quality and flavor of these early Dutch-made artisanal coffees was highly praised by locals who discovered them when they happened upon the sacks containing these unique wines. The first commercially successful Dutch-made artisanal coffees were made from Sumatra Javanese (“Java”) type Beans which were roasted using sustainable methods on small fires near Den Helder. This yielded dense but smooth cups with intense flavors that remain popular to this day! Since then, other countries have developed their own unique styles of espresso based off their own local climate, soil availability or production techniques
