The Washington, Missouri Air National Guard's Airmen have been deployed in support of the United States military for over sixty years. With many brave women answering America's call to serve her abroad in countries such as Norway and Germany, it was clear that there was much more that women could contribute to our armed forces than simply carrying water bottles or cooking dinner; woman had always played an important role in American society and were now being given an opportunity to prove it through service within our own borders. The Air Force deployed gift history in 1945. On December 8, 1945 the Air Force activated the 1st Bombardment Wing at Robins AFB with Boeing B-29 Superfortresses. The wing was assigned to Strategic Air Command and became operational on February 14, 1946. The wing flew its first bombing mission over Japan on March 9, 1946. From 1948 to 1951 the wing flew strategic missions against Communist China and North Korea. In 1949 the wing converted to jet aircraft and served as an interceptor squadron in strategic operations against Soviet Union until 1953 when it transitioned to tactical air commands role flying fighters for United States Central Command during Korean War. In 1955 the 1st BW transferred from Strategic Air Command to Tactical Air Command effective January 1, 1956 where it served as a fighter-bomber squadron in then United States alliances South Vietnam since 1959 and also providing logistical support for US military forces engaged in counter insurgency operations throughout Southeast Asia from 1965 until 1973 including Operation Rolling Thunder which involved forty thousand USAF bombers crossing Thailand into Cambodia
Washington, Mo. is a small town located in northwestern Missouri. The population was 3,651 at the 2000 census and 4,129 as of the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and named for George Washington, who had been president when Missouri became a state. The first post office was established in 1837; it was called "New Market." The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to its strategic location at the intersection of two wagon trails connecting Illinois with Kansas Territory and Texas. By 1860, Washington had a store, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, hotel, church and five other buildings. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Washington sided with Confederate States of America (CSA) against the Union government; however, he did not hostilities against his own countrymen. In 1865, he voted in favor of ratifying the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights to African Americans. After Reconstruction (1868-1912), Washington declined to re-establish slavery but allowed white farmers to operate cotton plantations rather than buy slaves outright from their owners. He also opposed liquor prohibition and supported educational opportunities for African Americans through local schools and colleges

In 1803, a group of French Canadians founded a small town in what is now Columbia County. They named the town after General James K. After Missouri attained statehood in 1861, Washington continued to be its capital until 1868 when it was moved to Jefferson City.
