By 1865, Warrensburg had grown so large that it became its own city, and its population totaled over five thousand people. After the war, the town struggled to maintain its prosperity, but it regained some degree of stability in the late nineteenth century through a series of incorporations and other business initiatives. Warrensburg is a city in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,098 at the 2010 census. The town was named after General Ulysses S. Grant and his army during the American Civil War. It was founded in 1854 by farmers from Illinois and Kentucky who had come to Independence County looking for land to farm. The first settler in Warrensburg was James Cockerill, who arrived in 1854 with his family from Kentucky. Cockerill soon built a cabin on the site of today's downtown square and began trading goods with local settlers. In 1860, he married Sarah Cook and moved to what is now the east side of town where he started a dairy operation that continues to be a major employer today. By 1870, the Grants had also arrived and started building homes around what is now Fourth Street NW; their home still stands as one of the most prominent buildings in town today. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Warrensburg experienced rapid growth thanks to its strategic location as an agricultural center between Springfield and Kansas City on both banks of the Missouri River; its proximity to railroads; and its position as an important port for shipping goods upstream into Kansas City (then called St Louis) across the river (Today's Jordanport). In 1902, when Jefferson Davis became President of America due to Abraham Lincoln's assassination, Wade Hampton served as governor of Missouri until he resigned because of political disagreements over Reconstruction-era policy changes in that state which favored black leaders over white ones. As part of this competition for power within Missourian society, Wade Hampton also organized a group known as "The New Negro Party" which aimed to unseat white Republicans from office throughout central Missouri while promoting African American equality statewide through education and voter registration drives. This party effort eventually failed but it did lead to increased racial tensions throughout much of central Missouri during these years - conditions that would later manifest themselves politically during World War I when eastern European immigrants were flooding into central Missouri amid Republican efforts to suppress them (see history: World War I). In 1903, following Affirmation Day - an event marking national LGBT pride - Warrensburg organized its own celebration which featured an parade down Third StreetNW followed by a picnic at nearby Mount Zion Park concurrent with National Gay & Lesbian Task Force's annual conference being held nearby at Alumni Hall on University Avenue NW; both events remain significant reminders of community support for gay rights at that time within western MO! Beginning in 1907, Warrensburg became home nightly headquarters for then-newspaper editor Harry Chandler located at 8th & Main Streets NW opposite Elmira College before moving permanently there two years later along with all other Chandler papers including The Torch (later called The Wichita Eagle) upon Harry Chandler's death in 1918 – one year after becoming Editor-in-Chief emeritus! From here until 1962 when new printing facilities were established adjacent to downtown square), allWarrensburg newspapers were published locally except flagship paper The Torch which continued publication out OFSTED until 1978!
