The United States Naval Reserve has been providing military assistance to other countries for centuries. In 1847, the first squadron of U.S. Navy warships was dispatched to Portugal as part of a peacekeeping mission; this Mission Midshipman Squadron remained in service until 1849. The United States Naval Militia also played an important role in international affairs during the 19th century. The America's first naval base, at Pensacola, Florida, opened in 1851 and quickly became a center for operations by the navy. By 1870, there were 1,500 sailors and marines stationed in thirteen naval stations around the world. During World War I (1914-18), the navy deployed over 1 million sailors and Marines to serve in six theaters of war: Europe (including the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa), Asia Pacific Theatre (Australia/New Zealand/Japan), Americas (South America and Mexico), Australia & New Zealand (Auspex theater), and South Africa (& Bechuanaland). Of these troops, more than half were mobilized through training at home before deployment overseas. The total cost of maintaining these forces was $134 million dollars ($ million today). After World War I ended on November 11th 1918, many American servicemen returned home with new experiences and ideas about how to use technology in their workaday lives while still serving their country abroad.
