Coffee was first roasted and brewed in ancient Greece. In the 6th century BC, Ptolemy I of Egypt discovered coffee beans in a wild bean field. The first coffeehouses where people could purchase Indonesian or Ethiopian coffee were opened in Venice, Italy in 1764. The Dutch introduced their own roasting methods to Java in 1695, which gave birth to the first commercially traded cup of java. It wasn’t until 1820 that African slaves brought over with them their knowledge of how to roast coffee beans, giving rise to the first black-owned co-operatives. The Dutch also introduced Sumatran coffees into Europe during this time and soon after began exporting these coffees to America (the United States) as well as other parts of the world. In 1895, First National Roasters became one of the first companies ever to export ground coffees directly from Africa to America. In 1912, Starbucks was founded by Howard Schultz and it is now one of the largest caffeine companies on Earth with an annual revenue greater than any other beverage company

University City, Missouri is a small city in southern Missouri that was founded on the banks of the Maumee River in 1836. The city was named for University of Missouri, which had been established in the area in 1824. The first post office was opened in University City on November 3, 1836. By 1840, University City had a population of about 150 people and it became an important shipping center for goods imported from Illinois and other states. In addition to its role as a shipping center, University City also served as the site of several educational institutions such as the nearby College of Physicians and Surgeons and St. Louis Academy. The city's most famous resident may be John Fenton Butler, who served as mayor from 1861-1867 and 1870-1871. In 1865, University City became part of Lincoln County when it was created from parts of Clay County. Over time, University City lost some of its importance as a shopping and entertainment center due to competition from larger cities such as Springfield and Columbia Heights. However, UCC continues to serve as an important academic institution with many faculties located within its walls.
