University City, Missouri is a city inCass County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first white settlers in University City were David Hogg and his family who arrived in 1839 from Kentucky. They started a tannery and farm that became known as Hogg's Corner. The town got its start when two railroads came through University City and needed to find a stop so they could merge. One of the passengers on the train said "this place looks like it's right out of Indiana". This led to the name being given to what is now University City by one of the railroad men when he stopped there on his way back from Independence, Missouri on November 15, 1859. In 1868 Ulysses S Grant attended college at Transylvania University (now George Mason University) and then worked for wagon trains coming into Kansas Territory during the American Civil War; he later became governor of Kansas and an Ulysses S Grant presidential candidate in 1896. In 1870 Ulysses S Grant married Julia Patterson (1838-1920). They had six children:Ulysses S., Julia L., Anna V., James F., Eleanor Roosevelt (1915-2002), Franklin D.) Grant was born in West Union Township, Ohio on December 12, 1784; he graduated from Yale College with an A.B.(1799) and then studied law under Rogers Clark at Fordham Law School before becoming a Congressman from New York’s 9th Congressional District (2001-2007).
