Troy, Missouri is a town located in the Big River Valley of east-central Missouri. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Troy was James Blythe who arrived here in 1819. At that time it was a small village with only 10 residents. In 1825, the village moved to its present location and began to grow rapidly because of its strategic location on a key road between Lexington and Springfield. In 1828, Greek Village (now known as Park City) became the site of what would become Troy. A group of American Greeks from Manhattan built their homes near the junction of two important highways in central Missouri – Stagecoach Road and Old Route 66 – for business and pleasure purposes. They were joined by local farmers who had come to live around them and started raising crops and cattle. Meanwhile, back at Athens, James Blythe's heirs sold their holdings in Troy to Nicholas Purdy for $5200 on December 9, 1830. This event marks one of the earliest realizations by settlers that they needed more than just Indian land to support themselves so they set out to purchase additional acreage east of downtown Athens – land that would eventually form today's Troy area. Purdy founded his own farmstead here called Pleasant Hill after his home country which he located about three miles northeast of where he now lives on US 61 near mile marker 248A . As property values increased along Stagecoach Road from Springfield into Johnson County (then Clay County), Purdy decided it was time to move his operations some 150 miles southwestward into what is now Starkville but at that time there were no towns or villages within easy reach thereof other than Athens proper; however he made arrangements through friends with Capt John Sibley then Captain George Fenton thenceforward proprietor’s agent for selling lots therein at increasing prices until finally establishing himself as proprietor…he purchased 1/2 mile square containing 7 acres lot No 2 …thus becoming one occupant with 8 others early this year [1833] having removed thereto from Athens while still under contract with Capt Sibley…He had before been living 6 or seven miles northwestward upon lot No 3….Beside him reside[d], Mrs Ann Goodloe & her family also 3 children viz., Margaret aged 15yrs ; Josephine aged 11yrs ; Elijah aged 7yrs It should be noted that not all members "of" this originalGreek Village community maintained ties throughout their lifetimes - some left once they made it big enough elsewhere while others may haveigrated later on when their original stay here came up for renewal but died young without any descendants remaining behind! Founding fathers James Blythe (1819-1830) Nicholas Purdy (1830-1833) Ann Goodloe (1799-1860) all passed away prior to 1840 though oral histories claim visits by various descendants during those years 🙂 Some current day descendants include: Jeffery Goodloe (bio), AnnaGoodloe(a descendant), Jeffrey Goodloe II (bio), Arlington Goodloe III (bio). Today's population size estimate above includes everyone descended from those aforementioned ancestors via both direct blood lines AND indirect lineages!
