Troy, Missouri is a small town in north-central Missouri, United States. It was founded on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1836 by George Armstrong Custer and his regiment of Union troops. The town has since grown to over 20,000 people. Troy is the county seat for Kane County. The town was named after General Ulysses S. Grant who fought in the American Civil War and received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Perryville. In 1840, Colonel John Tilton donated 3 acres (1 hectare) east of present-day downtown Troy to make way for a church and schoolhouse which were built there in 1845. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded Missouri, he occupied Troy until it fell on July 9th that year when Union forces arrived to retake it. The battle site is now part of Historic Troy Cemetery located within walking distance of the old schoolhouse and churchyard. In 1865, members of the Kansas Territorial legislature decided to form a new county in north-central Missouri called Kane County based on their election results from November 14th that year; this would give them control over all aspects of local government within their newly formed territory including education and land speculation as well as economic development within their boundaries which they desired to see succeed Kane County was organized on February 15th, 1866 with Troy as its county seat On October 1st 1870, voters in eastern Kane County voted overwhelmingly to secede from Missouri due to dissatisfaction with state policies related to slavery and Reconstruction following the American Civil War Aftermath of this event saw blacksmiths being arrested and burned at bridges during KKK rallies throughout central Missouri
