Town And Country, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of northwest Missouri. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1853 by settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee who founded a trading post on the confluence of the Klamath River and Big Creek. The post was abandoned in 1857 after being destroyed by a fire. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Ulysses S. Grant's Brigade to cross the Klamath River and attack a Confederate army under John Bell Hood near present-day Farmington, MO. The brigade's commanding officer, Major General Philip Sheridan, decided to move his brigade acrossriver instead of waiting for orders and crossed with only 200 men instead of 4500 as ordered. Sheridan's decision helped give Union forces an advantage over Confederate forces at that point in the war. In 1870, Town And Country became an incorporated village when it joined Union County. In 1907, local farmers formed a cooperative to raise chickens for market; this led to Town And Country becoming one of the first towns in America to have poultry production as its mainstay economy.. The first people to live in Town And Country were several groups of French Canadians who settled around 1810 near what is now town square. The first school was built in 1812 and the first post office was established in 1814. In 1824, Town And Country became a county seat and adopted its present name of Springfield when it merged with other counties to form St. Francois County.
