Town And Country, Missouri was a town and county in north-central Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,746. The county seat was Paintsville. The first permanent settler in Town And Country is thought to be John Atwater, who arrived in 1795. Atwater built a log cabin on the banks of the White River. He named his new land "Atwater's Purchase" because he paid for it with goods he had brought over from England. In 1827, Daniel Boone discovered what would become Town AndCountry when he and his party explored the area near modern-day Springfield while they were looking for a route to Oregon. They found evidence that there had been a previous Indian settlement hereabouts - possibly as early as 1778 - and named it after their discovery. In 1834, General James K. Polk founded Stonington Springs on nearby Spring Hill Creek and made it the temporary capital of Missouri during his term as president of the United States. When Polk moved out of Stonington Springs in 1837, he gave most of its territory to Paintsville Township (now Phelps County). The first courthouse in Town And Country was erected at what is now Manning's Landing on White River in 1835 by Judge Charles Hodge with help from local farmers and boosters before departing for Independence where he represented Jefferson County on the Kansas Territorial Legislature before becoming governor there in 1850-1851 under Ulysses S Grant’s administration The building still stands today (along with part of its original wall) within walking distance of downtown Paintsville . In 1865 Union General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House east side of Main Street which became known as Lee’s Landing along White River south side continuing until present day as mill race running through town center .. After Reconstruction ended in America following Civil War these lands reverted back to their original white majority Republican boundaries
