Town And Country is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,672 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Town And Country were Laborers who came to live and farm in the area around 1836. A post office was established in 1837 and named for George Washington Parish (now Webster Township), which then included much of present-day Clay County. In 1839, land was donated by Major General Andrew J. Butler to form the parish's proposed township. The first settler to arrive in what is now Town And Country was John Fenton who arrived on July 24, 1840 from Kentucky with his family. By 1847, there were over 20 families living in what became known as "Fenton Township." In 1860, Union troops burned down the courthouse and jail nearpresent-day town center after an attempt by local Republicans to remove Confederate sympathizers from the area during the American Civil War had failed; this event markedthe end of a period of relative peace and prosperity for early residents of Town AndCountry. A new courthouse and jail were built soon afterward and remain standing today as part of downtown Springfield's history museum complex.
