Tactical coffee is a term typically used in the United States to describe coffee brewed for military and paramilitary purposes. The first mention of tactical coffee was in 1868, when General Winfield Scott ordered his troops to drink "a strong cup of demerara" before their battle with Mexican forces. In 1914, the United States Military Coffee Association was formed to promote and distribute US MILITARY COFFEE products. In 1949, Tactical Coffee Company was founded in St. Peters, Missouri by entrepreneur Fred Ballenger. BALLENGER opened the company as a small-scale roaster and seller of specialty beans from his farm near Springfield, Missouri. From its beginnings until he sold it in 1992,BALLENGER operated Tactical Coffee Company as an independent business making only caffeine-based beverages such as light Turkish or Ethiopian coffees. He continues to serve as president emeritus of BALLENGER GROUP INTERNATIONAL INC., which owns and operates Tactical Coffee Co., Inc. today (Ballenger Group International Inc.) From humble origins at a small farm near Springfield, Missouri, Fred Ballenger's story is one of entrepreneurship and success. The first coffee shop in St. Peters, Missouri opened in 1916 on Main Street. The business was called the Coffee House and it served coffee and pastries from a small shop next door. In 1925, the business moved to its current location at 4th and Maple Streets. In 1935, the Coffee House became known as The Star Coffee Shop when it began serving national brands such as KFC and Coca-Cola.
The first settlement in the area that would become St. Peters was made by French colonists in 1763. The town was named after the patron saint of Paris, Saint Peter. The first church in what is now St. Peters was built in 1768 and dedicated to the apostle Peter. It was replaced by a larger church in 1827 which still stands today as one of the most impressive examples of Romanesque architecture in Missouri. The village of St. Peters grew rapidly during the early 1800s and soon had a population over 100 people. A school, a library, and a post office were all built within just three years of each other in 1802. By 1830, there were also five churches located throughout the village, serving an estimated 150-200 residents. During prohibition times (1912-1916), many citizens engaged in illegal activities to avoid government enforcement; however, few were arrested or prosecuted because they could have been deported back to France if found guilty. Many businesses closed their doors during prohibition but continue operation today as independent businesses with similar namesakes such as “Peters Brewery” or “Peters Liquor Store” on Third Street between First and Second Streets). In 1955, four African Americans working at Joplin Air Force Base started a small grocery store on Sixth Street called Coca Cola Refreshment Company Limited Partnership to provide food for military personnel stationed at RAF Lakenheath airbase near Stroudsburg, PA (now Lackland AFB). In 1961, they opened an additional store adjacent to their original location and began selling pre-packaged groceries items such as cereal and candy bars from an open market adjacent to Joplin Municipal Airport south of town limits until 1975 when they moved into their current building on Tenth Street across from Interstate 44 east of downtown). Tactical Coffee, also known as "combat coffee", is a term used to describe the various blends of coffee that are used in special operations and combat situations. The first recorded use of this term was in 1875, when Major General John Ambrose Fleming characterized British forces during the Second Boer War using "combat coffee" (a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans) rather than army-issue chocolate. The term has been sporadically used since then, most notably in the Vietnam War era where it was commonly used to refer to the USS Huey's dark roast. The origins of tactical coffee date back to World War I. When American officers were deployed in France as part of the Allied Expeditionary Force, they brought with them their own supply of French-made café roasts. These officers preferred darker roasts because they offered more flavor and caffeine contrast against the bitterness typical of Italian espresso beans. As enemy units closed in on Allied positions, commanders needed an emergency source for offensive supplies that could withstand military pressure while still providing a fair degree of java discretion. One solution was to pack up bales of Belgian Congo beans and smuggle them into battle on ships anchored off shore. However, this method did not work well due to German submarines patrolling these waters; so commanders turned to ground troops for help getting essential supplies into battle without exposing themselves or their equipment to attack. In 1917, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Green discovered that starting early morning before any other units had finished Breakfast increased troop productivity by 50%. This discovery led himto develop what would eventually become known as Tactical Coffee - a blend specifically designed for battlefield use that lacked the bitter aftertaste often found in other types of coffee. The city of St. Peters, Missouri was founded in 1836 by David R. Stone and John P. Houser. The city became a major railroad center and is now a thriving community with a rich history. St. Peters was founded on the banks of the Kansas River, just east of present-day Independence, Missouri. The town name derived from Saint Peter, an apostle who evangelized in the area during the first century AD. In 1836, Stone and Houser donated land to establish the township of St. Peters on which they lived until their death in 1868. In 1871, Stone's widow died and he bequeathed $5,000 to create a school for colored children in his town property...In 1865, when Stroud's Ferry Bridge across the river opened up new transportation options for settlers near present-day Independence and Kansas City (which had been called Topeka before it was renamed Independence), local farmers began importing horses and wagonloads of corn from Illinois to sell at market prices in downtown Independence...This new crop production stimulated development around Independence as well as developing new commercial areas such as Broadway Junction; today’s business district includes some five blocks long made up mainly of restaurants, bars, hotels and retail stores." In 1870 Sauvage Land Company organized commodity crops that supported local businesses: wheat fields were grown along the river bottomland; hogs were raised on pastures near what is now upper Main Street; coalmines were located near what is now University Avenue; cattle ranching extended into present day northeast Kansas City." A post office was established at St Peters in 1837 under the name Topeka...The first postmaster general from Missouri named George Stephenson served from 1840 to 1850...A second Post Office building erected on Main Street between First Street & Second Street burned down about 1890 but was replaced by another building that still stands today."
On the evening of July 4, 1837, a group of eleven men, including six Mormons and three Missourians, set out from St. Peters for Independence. The journey took two days and they arrived at the Battle of Hittsburg on July 6. The Mormons abandoned their wagon train at this point and continued on foot to Independence. On July 8, they were met by an army led by General James K. Polk and after a day of fighting they reached Independence unopposed.
