St. Peters, Missouri is a town in and the county seat of Scott County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1838 by Father John Redmond and Brother Peter Redmond on a tract of land granted to them by the Government of Missouri. The first Catholic Church in Scott County was built in St. Peters in 1839. It functioned as a chapel until 1862 when it became the home of Bishop John Hughes who moved his see to Kansas City. In 1875, Father Edward Ahern started what is now called "The Ahern House" as an orphanage which served the needs of orphans and widows until 1951 when it became known as the Stampede Girls' Home for Girls through an affiliation with The Ford Foundation. In 1902, Father James Lynch took over leadership from Father Hughes and changed the name to Statedome Parish Cathedral for all parishes within Scott County that desired one such designation. Over time many new churches were built or dedicated throughout Scott County including Our Lady Of Angels (1949), Immaculate Conception (1974), Assumption (1978), Divine Mercy (1986) and Our Lady Of Mount Carmel (1997). On November 3rd, 2003 Pope John Paul II pilgrimages began their journey from Rome to Saint Petersburg in Russia via Hollywood then on to Moscow before concluding their trip at Kazan on October 25th with a visit to Kursk Monastery where he blessed some 1,500 Orthodox believers!
