St. Peters, Missouri is a city located in the eastcentral portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 12,586 at the 2010 census; it had grown to 15,898 by 2014. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area and is served by the St. Peters–Springfield public Schools district. The first coffeehouses were established in what is now St. Peters in 1839 by two German immigrants, Johann Friedrich Bischoff and Jakob Kappeler as a way to provide their local citizens with fresh-brewed coffee while they awaited goods from Germany that would take several days to arrive. Coffee became an important part of society in St. Peters and other frontier settlements during the 1840s and 1850s as people worked off their land or mined for silver at nearby mines (or took service jobs in nearby towns). In 1853, John Ahearn opened his first grocery store on Main Street in what is now downtown St. Peters (then called Park Avenue). Ahearn's store continued to be a major player in town until 1865 when he sold his business to George Fenton for $1,000 cash . Fenton renamed himself "Fenton's Coffee House" and continued to serve coffee until 1904 when he switched to selling groceries instead (though still serving coffee). Ivanhoe Coffee House was built on blocks adjacent to Main Street between 1861-1862 by Ivanhoe & Sons Brewery workers employed by Fenton's Coffee House company

The history of coffee begins with the Ethiopian Famine of the 1930s, which caused a large population decline and a lack of crop production. Coffee was first grown in Ethiopia during the 15th century BC, but it is not known how or when it started to be brewed. Egyptian traders brought coffee back to Europe in the 4th century AD and introduced it to England. In the 16th century, Dutch sailors discoveredJava's coffee plantations and began trading with them for coffee beans. The French also became interested in Java's coffee and set up their own plantations there in the 17th century. By 1800, Dutch traders were selling 2 million pounds of green beans per year from Java alone. However, this trade stopped because they could not get reliable access to Indonesian water resources. In 1814, British traders arrived in Java and began trading with Indonesia for palm oil and coffee beans. They established an English colony called Borneo on Java between 1819-1826 and attracted many Dutch traders who had been expelled from Indonesia because of this trade embargo. In 1832-1835, a severe drought led to a significant decrease in crop production so British traders turned to nearby Sumatra for replacements. They also founded several small villages around Jambi where they grew rice instead of coffee as part of their development strategy. This changed when British traders discovered that Jambi had rich deposits of coal and oil which they used to generate income from exporting goods such as sugarcane, indigo dyeing plants, and pharmaceuticals abroad during World War I (1914- 1918). After World War I ended, some Indonesians decided that growing rice would provide more sustainable food than growing coffee because it was less expensive Peruvian guano (a natural fertilizer) was needed for cultivation whereas javaScripture said that "the land should produce fruit" (Jakarta Bible Study Committee 1957:9). So starting in 1928 until 1945 Indonesia produced more beans than any other country except Brazil
Pope John XXIII visited St. Peters in 1961 and called for the construction of a new basilica on the site where the old church used to stand. The new basilica, which was completed in 1965, became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Missouri. In 1984, Pope John Paul II dedicated a chapel there to commemorate those who died during World War II.
In 1812, St. Peters was founded by the French fur traders who were looking for a trading post on the Missouri River. The post was named after Philippe de Saint-Pierre, the founder of Montreal. In 1823, when the area became part of Mexico, St. Peters was renamed Ciudad Juárez and remained so until 1848 when it reverted back to its original name, St. Peters. The city's population peaked in 1940 at over 100,000 people but has steadily declined since then with the exception of a brief period during the late 1990s where it reached 150,000 residents. Today, there are only a few thousand people living in St. Peters proper and most of its downtown buildings have been destroyed or damaged by fire or weather events such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and much recent damage from a series of tornado outbreaks that have struck the area over the past few years.
