St. Peters is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It was founded in 1825 by Father Gabriel Marillier, and has been home to Catholic missionaries ever since. The population of St. Peters was 996 at the 2010 census. The parish of Our Lady of Charity is one of the oldest churches in St. Peters and it is still in use today as a Parish Church. It served as the original parish church for what is now the city of St. Peters, which was then part of Shawnee County. In 1831, Father Marillier erected a new Parish Church on the present site which he named Notre Dame de Chartres after Queen Elizabeth I (the mother country). In 1863, when Missouri became an all-male state, Fraternity Novena moved its convent from Rome to St. Paul’s Chapel on Capitol Avenue in order to become more open to women congregants who wanted to join their religion without having to leave their families behind – an act that set off a wave of female religious formation throughout much rural America during this time period (see “Catholic Associations among Women: A Timeline” pgs 5-8). Pope John XXIII consecrated Our Lady of Charity as a Cathedral on October 26th, 1965 following his visit to Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome where he blessed both our Lady’s altar and new cathedral building – marking not only an important milestone for our beautiful cathedral but also testament to her status as one of Catholicism’s holiest icons worldwide! Today, we continue celebrating Mass every day at 12 noon inside or outside our beautiful cathedral with countless offerings made by individuals and groups alike!
