Artisan coffee is a centuries-old tradition in St. Joseph, Missouri. The first cafe in the town was opened by Dutch immigrants in 1892. Coffee began to be brewed onsite at the cafe and then sold through local merchants. In 1915, the first grocery store in town opened and selling coffee was also part of their business. By 1930, there were six cafes and over seventy-five businesses servicing the population of around 2,000 people. In 1957, Mr. Joe's Coffee became the first self-service coffee shop in St. Joseph when it opened on Main Street near downtown. This establishment played an important role in developing the city as an espresso center for the area and helped make St. Joseph one of America’s most popular tourist destinations for coffee lovers from all over the country. Today, artisan coffee continues to play a significant role in St. Joseph’s economy with twenty-four cafes serving more than 1,500 customers each week across five locations: Main Street Square (Downtown), The Depot (Central Business District), MrJoe’s Coffee annex on Gregory Drive (East Side), The Maltings on Governors Avenue (South Side) and The Richest Place On Earth at 106 N State Road 7 (West Side).

The first Christian settlers in St. Joseph, Missouri were Methodists who arrived in 1809. The town was named for Saint Joseph, the patron saint of Egypt. The town had a population of about 60 people when it was platted in 1825. In 1830, the town became a part of Mexico and did not gain U.S. citizenship until 1846. In 1840, St. Joseph was the site of a civil war between pro-Union and pro-Confederate forces. The Battle of Nauvoo was fought on December 12th, 1840 between Union troops and Confederate forces under General Robert Ewing who had come to support the Confederacy. A total of 183 men died in this battle which ended with Union victory over Confederate forces. TheBattle of Nauvoo also resulted in the loss of many lives for both sides including 83% casualties for the Union side while only 10% casualties occurred for the Confederacy
