St. Charles, Missouri was founded on October 12, 1836 by the pioneer families of Maryland and Virginia. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his wife, Sarah St. Charles Polk, who were the first white people to settle in the area. The townsite that now stands in downtown St. Charles was laid out by contractor John Dacus on December 13, 1836. By 1840, there were over 1,000 residents in town and it had a post office and a schoolhouse. In 1851, the first railroad reached St.Charles from Illinois; this made the town an important transportation center for goods moving between Kansas City and Saint Louis. In 1859-60, construction began on what is now known as "The Mill," which became one of the largest cotton mills in America during its heyday; it manufactured more than 4 million pounds of fabric per year! On May 6th 1870, just before Missouri became a state following November 3rd of that year, St.Charles' incorporation as a city occurred under charter number 9362!
