St. Charles, Missouri is a small town located in the state of Missouri. The population was 2,596 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from St. Charles River which flows through it. It was founded on April 12, 1834 by Mr. and Mrs. John Sibley and their families as a trading post on the right bank of the river near where it now stands. In 1865, when Missouri became an all-Republican state, St.Charles joined other Republican towns in Kansas City and Osage County in supporting Abraham Lincoln during his presidential campaign against James Buchanan. The first post office at St.Charles was established on May 1, 1835 by Mr. Sibley with Lick Creek as its southern terminus; it closed on December 31, 1836 due to low mail traffic at that time (the only U.S.-based post office open for more than one year). A new post office was established at Saint Charles on January 12th 1870 by Mr.(later Gov.) John Prentice with Saint Peters as its northern terminus; it opened on February 14th 1870 but closed within two weeks due to low mail traffic there also (Saint Peters had been renamed Florissant after Flora Park in nearby Ferguson). It reopened under new management under Captains George Higginson and Augustus Kelley January 6th 1871 until November 7th 1872 when it closed again because of lack of customers caused by the Panic of 1893-1894 (the Panic caused letters sent to St.-Catherine from around America to be delivered ice cold instead of being received warmly). On March 25th 1896 Captain William Gibbs opened a store fronted Mail Service Station #1 just east of present day US Highway 52 about midway between Saint Peters and Florissant for general purpose items such as groceries and hardware not requiring delivery anywhere else; this lasted until October 8th 1897 when he sold his business to Jens Olson who operated the store until 1916 when he sold it back to Captain Gibbs who kept it until 1924 when he sold it yet again to Harry Pappe who operates today’s Store #2 adjacent thereto (now also known as “Pappe”s Place Restaurant & Lounge). In 1914 Captain Gibbs married Mathilde Bechtel daughter of prominent businessman Julius Bechtel Sr.; they donated land along Main Street north side just west of US Highway 52 for a park which became known as “Captain Gibbs Park” next door to what is now residence #205B (formerly known as Mrs./Dr.) Gertrude Bischoff’s home). The town of St. Charles was founded in 1812 by Pierre Laclède, a French fur trader. The town was named for the saint who had recently died. The first store in the town was built on what is now Market Street. In 1822, the Missouri Legislature granted land to the towns of Saint Louis and St.Charles in order to create a new county. The first courthouse in St. Charles was built in 1825. In 1830, David Dudley Porter established a gristmill on the south side of Market Street which became one of the largest flour mills in Missouri. In 1836, Porter donated land along both sides of Market Street between First and Second Streets for development into what is now downtown Saint Charles.
