St. Charles, Missouri is a town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 8,569 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of St. Charles County and home to the University of St.Charles and other educational institutions. The village of Manchester was founded by Colerain loggers on the neck of land between Manchester and Crestwood in 1854 as a stop on their way from Illinois to Kansas City through this region. The loggers named their community after Saint Charles Borromeo, an Italian Catholic missionary who traveled through this area in 1847-48. In 1871, when Union Pacific Railroad reached Manchester from Illinois via Farmington Hills and Emporia Falls, it decided to move the railroad yards there instead of continuing westward along Morrison Avenue past Manchester which had been its original name according to local tradition (the name "Manchester" originated with a settler's purchase of 168 acres (64 ha) near present-day Crestwood). The first post office at Manchester was established on December 12, 1868; it was discontinued on February 17, 1870 because of changes in postal service across America caused by the American Civil War (the date 1865 is also frequently listed as date of establishment for that office). In 1872, when Jordan Coal Company began production nearby at Cherry Orchard Mine No. 2 (), renamed Clearwater mine later that year due to increased Production costs associated with new technology), four men—Alfred Jourdain (1851-1928), George Duhalde (1853-1927), Auguste Poulin (December 15th – May 7th 1860) and Pierre Lavalpinet (. . .)—organized what became known as "The Four Musketeers" to Devices for Working Men under Aide deCamp General John Custer during his 1862 military campaign against Native Americans in present-day Jackson County (). These men worked side by side developing coal seams until 1865 when they were ordered back east by Ulysses S Grant (). After reaching Uniontown they continued working together until their deaths (); Alfred Jourdain left behind two sons: Alfred Jr., born October 12th 1863; George Duhalde Jr., born November 3rd 1865; Pierre Lavalpinet III born March 6th 1870.Jourdain papers box 1 folder 9 St..Charlesville Cemetery #1 opened on September 6th 1889.Alterations made 1898 - 1902 may be original cemetery location On account of Louisville becoming a city in 1904 all burials moved from St..Charlesville Cemetery #1 to Masonic Temple Cemetery adjacent to main library. Some graves remain there today despite being exhumed many times over since then. When US Airways Flight 587 crashed intoxa Creek three miles south-southwest of town center killing all fifty passengers on board including both pilots one could assume that either residents or business people were killed along creek bank since most houses around creek are built before 1920s or even earlier if not destroyed during those years like some hospitals were. There have been several excavations throughout decades but so far no bodies have ever been located.
