In 1825, the town was established on the west bank of the Raccoon River byuf farmers who were displaced by Indians in what is now Kansas. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and since it lay on a trade route between Missouri and Illinois, merchants from both states would come to St. Charles for goods or services. By 1830, the population of St. Charles had reached 1,500 people and it began developing into a small town with churches, schools, businesses and residences. In 1848, when Saint Louis became an independent city, St.Charles merged with it creating one of the most powerful cities in the state. The merger allowed for more growth within the city limits as well as new opportunities for commerce and industry which helped spur economic development throughout Saint Louis County. In 1955, after years of planning and renovation by Mayor John Pritzker (a native of Chicago), St.Charles became world-renowned for its newly renovated downtown district which is home to many high-end shops such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus Outlet Mall among others. Today, Saint Charles continues to be a vibrant community that enjoys strong cultural ties with other cities in Illinois including Chicago and Springfield though some residents commute to these larger metropolitan areas for work purposes or pleasure purposes

The town of St. Charles, Missouri was founded in 1837 by the brothers Daniel and Nicholas Kapp. The first settler in what is now Saint Charles County was Nicholas Kapp, who arrived in 1834. At the time, it was a part of Illinois. In 1838, Daniel Kapp bought land from the Indians and built a small cabin on the banks of the river La Salle. By 1840, he had erected a log house which served as their provisional courthouse for about 10 years until it was replaced by a more permanent structure in 1860. In 1853, Samuel Fenton bought some land near present-day Saint Charles City and began to develop it into an agricultural center with large fruit orchards and corn cribs. He named his property "Fenton's Farm" after himself and his son John Fenton (1802-68). By 1865, however, many farmers had moved to new territory near Saint Louis because of the profitability of railways linking that city with points farther west. In that year, St. Charles became one of three towns located within Present day Saint Louis County when that county was formed from parts of Jennings and Scott counties.. In 1870-71, Isaac Sibley organized five Methodist churches at present day St. Joseph across from where Father George Shemal now presides over Holy Cross Catholic Church (the original parish church) on Main Street in downtown Saint Charles City; these were among the first churches established in what is nowSaintCharlesCounty., Over time they grew larger until they acquired their own building on Robey Street adjacent to Present day Catholic High School (now known as Notre Dame Preparatory School) which they used until 1922 when they sold it to Driscoll Brothers Chevrolet Plant #1 where it still stands today as an important commercial development withinStCharlesCityToday! Apostate Sisters also started out life here at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Convent before moving to Quebec City later on for various reasons including political unrest there during World War 1 etcetera but eventually returned here permanently sometime around 1920’s although some members did go back outside America during this time period such as Mother Jeanne Marie Bourque who worked at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Convent & lived temporarily with us for several months prior to her return home later...During World War II we opened our convent doors completely unto all American citizens regardless of your religion or nationality no matter how ‘bad’ you may feel about being an American Citizen! This policy continued up through our closure days ago September 11th 2001 although much has changed since then especially since 9/11!! We are just happy that we are still open today & serving all manner of people whether Protestant Greek Orthodox Catholics Slovak Muslims Jehovah’s Witnesses Atheists etcetera!
In 1839, the town of St. Charles was founded on a grant from theMissouri Legislature. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had been president of Missouri at the time. The first store in St. Charles opened in 1853. In 1870, whisky was legalized and business began to thrive in St.Charles as whiskey became a popular drink in America. The towns population rapidly grew, reaching 10,000 by 1886 and 15,000 by 1912. A major transportation artery throughSTC was the Missouri Pacific Railroad which connected STL with Kansas City and other cities throughout America. Businesses located along the railroad helped spur population growth and development in STC during its early years. During World War II, many jobs were generated withinSTC by manufacturers of military weapons and equipment that manufactured plants withinStClaire-Dundalktown area including Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRAN), Grease Gun Company (GGC), Springfield Armory (SA) and many others.. Finally after much debate it was decided thatthe city would be called Independence when it formally became a city on November 3rd 1945
