The town was founded in 1878 by Nicholas Roastmaster and his wife Agnes Roastmasters as a small log cabin community on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first coffee shop in St. Charles was opened in 1881 by Nicholas Roastmaster and his wife Agnes Roastmasters. The business grew rapidly and within a few years, there were several cafes and businesses operating in the downtown area of St. Charles. By 1907, Gourmet Coffee had become one of the most popular providers of high-quality coffee beans and roasts throughout Missouri and Illinois. The popularity of gourmet coffee continued to grow throughout World War II; during this time, many local businesses decided to start producing their own beans for military personnel stationed at various locations around Missouri and Illinois. As war progressed, so too didGI Joe's love for fair trade coffees - Gourmet Coffee began packaging their beans specifically for GI Joe's use in 1943! In 1951, Gourmet Coffee relocated from its original location to its current headquarters building located on Main Street in downtown St.Charles! Saint Charles, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders in the 17th century. In 1803, Lewis and Clark visited Saint Charles while on their way southward through present-day Missouri. They noted that "a small stream flows into a deep ravine which forms one side of the village." This ravine is now known as Illinois Avenue. In 1836, Saint Charles was named for General James St.Charles surgeon general of the Union Army during the American Civil War who fought against Confederate forces near Springfield, Missouri. On July 4, 1836 St.Charles was incorporated as a village by act of the legislature and had a population of eighty settlers. In 1861, when Saint Charles seceded from Monsanto County to become part of Ford County (later renamed Johnson County), its post office became Fenton Post Office and remained so until it merged with Grand Marais Post Office in 1904. Fenton was laid out on March 5th, 1800 by Captain Nathaniel Waddell and named after his friend Colonel George Fenton who served in both armies under Washington during the war for independence (and later became an associate justice on the United States Supreme Court).Waddell's donation formed what is now corner street east of Main Street; he also donated land to build what is now Park Row Cemetery on what are today York Avenue and Louisiana Avenue north of Main Street; this cemetery still exists today as part of Crossroads Cemetery network served by Memphis Cemetery Services Inc.. The name change may be connected with early Mormon pioneer Utah missionary Lorenzo Snow’s efforts to bring Saints overland from Nauvoo IL back up to Zion Valley NV where they could start anew…. After three years Governor Reynolds called another meeting to take action on whether or not incorporation should be granted…..On July 24th 1868 incorporation was granted with a population Of 350 residents……… much more people would move into present day StCharles over time! The original home built for General James StCharles in 1840 remains standing today - it is currently occupied by Crossroads Nursery School across from Park Row Cemetery – located just off US Hwy 84 exit 217B off I-55 about 12 miles west-northwest of Saint Charles proper
