The United States Army was founded in 1775, and the first units were raised in St. Charles, Missouri. The city of St. Charles was named for General George Washington, and the town grew up around him. The Missouri National Guard has a rich history in St. Charles,Mo. It was first organized on Sept. 12, 1861 when the Missouri state militia was called into service to fight for the Confederate States of America. The unit was disbanded on July 10, 1865 following the end of the American Civil War. In 1892, the Guard was re-organized as an infantry regiment and assigned to duty in St. Louis County. In 1912, it was redesignated as an armored regiment and sent to Fort Riley Army Base in Kansas for training before being reassigned to St. Charles in 1916 as part of General John J. Pershing's Expeditionary Force during World War I. The regiment served with distinction through both wars and is still active today with multiple battalions stationed throughout Missouri including at Rolla Army Air Field near Independence and elsewhere across the nation providing protection for our citizens and their property while also conducting ceremonial events such as state funerals or parades commemorating military achievements such as World Wars I & II
Pope Francis visited St. Charles, Missouri on July 15th, 2015 and announced his intentions to visit the city in late 2016 or early 2017. The Pope was greeted by Mayor James Knowles and many of the city's residents who had gathered to celebrate his visit. Many believe that this is a sign that Catholicism is growing in Missouri, as well as around the world. Since its incorporation as a borough in 1839, St. Charles has been an important community in the state. Today, it remains a small town with close-knit relationships between its residents and their elected officials. St. Charles is home to several churches including Our Lady of Lourdes Parish which was founded in 1853 by two German immigrants who were looking for a place where they could find solace after their husbands' death during the Mexican-American War. Today, Lourdes accounts for over half of all Catholic church services in the city limits - significantly more than any other parishioner. In addition to her religious duties at Lourdes, Mrs.� Mary (nee Robinson) serves as president of synod for Catholics living outside of Chicago - making her one of the most visible leaders within St.Charles' Episcopal congregation."
