Sikeston, Missouri is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Sikeston were the Potawatomi people who lived near present-day Hillsboro and other areas along the confluence of the Ozarks and Hiwassee Rivers. The area that became Sikeston was settled by Germans in 1839 after their land grant from President James K. Polk was approved. In 1849, John Gorman built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in what is now Sikeston. Gorman's cabin soon became a popular stopping point for travelers traveling between Springfield and St Louis. A post office called "Sikeston" was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell besieged Union forces at Cairo during the Battle of Cairo; when Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant arrived to relieve them, they found that Ewell had already abandoned his garrison there and fled back into Missouri before they could pursuit him northward. This event helped spur development around Petersburg Heights where Union forces were encamped while conducting operations against Confederate general Jubal Early outside of Springfield on July 15-16, 1865; according to one account an estimated 10% of all Hannibal Road traffic passed through this intersection during this time period due to military supply convoys moving eastward from Springfield via Petersburg Heights en route to Early's army encampment at Chickamauga National Park northwest of Chattanooga Tennessee. The town name derives from its location on Hiawatha Creek (now called Big Creek) within walking distance of many wells which furnished water for Indians living along the creek as well as settlers arriving after Indian Removal Act proceedings started in 1830s onwards such as German immigrants coming from Germany following Napoleonic Wars then American ones following War with Mexico starting in 1848–49 also wagon trains carrying goods coming downriver shouldering upriver crossings). According to one account given by an early settler named George Stephenson: "When we came here we saw nothing but woods behind us so we named our place 'Sikeston' because it would be close enough to get good water without going too far." After he died young (aged 49 years old) some members of Congress decided that he should have been honored with statehood like many others prior to him like General Tom Pendergast or Governor Claiborne Pell etc but no action ever took place either way until 1938 when attorney general Orville Faubus announced plans for new racial classification legislation known as The Kansas City Plan – this proposed plan would have standardized housing throughout Kansas City rather than letting each neighborhood operate independently which would've caused waves of displacement among African Americans across the city particularly those residing near downtown including much gentrification still taking place today albeit more quietly

Sikeston, Missouri is a town located in Union County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1827 and named after Captain Jean-Baptiste Sikeston of the French Dragoon Guards. The town was originally part of the Platte River Indian Reservation. In 1851, it became a general store and post office. It began to grow when settlers arrived from Illinois in 1856. The first school was built in 1857 and the first Post Office opened on February 14th of that year. The community had two stores by 1860 and four churches by 1870. After the opening of the railroad through town in 1872, business grew even faster and by 1880 there were twelve stores, six churches, one grocery store, three hotels and two schools among other businesses. In 1907, Sikeston had its first tornado when an EF3 tornado struck the area killing sixteen people including five children between Heavens Chapel Baptist Church and Mount Zion Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1915, construction began on what would become known as "The Sacred Heart" Catholic Church which would serve as a center for religious services for many years until it burned down in 1976. After World War II ended there were efforts to start a small manufacturing industry but this failed to take off until the late 1960s when Sikeston became home to several companies such as Hennig's Carpet & Flooring Company which produced carpet products before moving out of town completely in 1984; Sikeston Electric Cooperative which provided power to many homes throughout central Missouri during this time; Bluegrass Tire & Rubber Company which manufactured tyres before moving out of town also; and finally J&J Chevrolet who moved into their new factory near downtown Sikeston after purchasing an old car dealership nearby back in 1981).
