Sedalia, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 3,402 at the 2010 census. Sedalia is the seat of Sedalia Township and contains part of the city of Sedalia. The name "Sedalia" comes from an early French settlers' account of a valley between this township and Iuka, Arkansas, where they found water so pure that it looked like salt. The present day town started as a farmstead on what is now north side of US 50 (now called Old US 50), about one mile east of modern-day downtown Sedalia. The first settler in what became Sedalia was James Hinton in 1837; he bought 640 acres (2 km²) from John Cockrell for $100. Hinton built his home on what is now south side of US 50 near today's intersection with Central Avenue. By 1850, when the Kansas–Nebraska Act went into effect, there were nine stores and 350 residents in Sedalia; by 1860 there were 12 stores and 500 residents. In 1861, after three years of wrangling over statehood between Kansas and Missouri, Sedalia voted to become a city proper under ordinance No. 514; this made it immediately adjacent to present-day downtown Sedlia despite its small size compared to other cities in the area at that time. In 1870–71 Confederate General Robert Ewell spent two days in town while preparations were being made for an attack on Springfield; upon his return he destroyed most or allofthe homes in town which had been built during that time frame according to contemporary reports (). The Panic of 1893 hurtsedsedalians greatly: businesses closed their doors for lack of customers; prices for goods increased 20%, 25%, or 30%; grain prices also increased sharply (). One result may have been more people moving out into sedalianshipprings outside the city limits (), leading to increased stability within the boundaries constricted by economic factors (). In 1896–97 heavy rains caused mudslides along nearby White River which destroyed many homes (); some people rebuilt but most abandoned efforts after experiencing similar disasters elsewhere () . When Memphis finally annexed much older towns such as St Josephsville (1896) or Shepherdstown (1901), these changes too led to new arrivals () who gradually replaced those eliminated by natural causes (). The population peaked at 675 persons in 1910 before slowly declining until 2000 when it reached 3,402
