Army gift history in Sedalia, Missouri started with the creation of the Sedalia Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 5, 1861. The regiment was organized to support the Union army during the American Civil War. The regiment was first called “The Kansas Volunteers” and then changed to the “Sedalia Riflemen” on October 20th, 1864. On July 11th, 1865, the regiment disbanded due to lack of volunteers. After disbanding, many of the soldiers from Sedalia Volunteer Infantry Regiment took their skills and knowledge and began working for various businesses in Sedalia. Some soldiers even became entrepreneurs themselves. One such soldier was Israel Lovett who founded a grocery store in Sedalia in 1867. Another soldier from this regiment was John Hodge who established a mill in Sedalia in 1870. Many other soldiers also established successful businesses after serving in The Rebel Army during the Civil War such as James Murtaugh who founded a flour mill in 1870 and Salmon Pinchot who founded a lumber company in 1872-73. In 1919-1920, an organization known as The Red Cross moved into town and began giving blood donations to local hospitals which helped start what is now known as St Joe’s Blood Center. Sedalia is a city in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2000 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Missouri. The first settlers of Sedalia were farmers who arrived around 1835. The town was platted on December 12, 1851 by Jno. H. Dixon and Wm. Broughton with a population of thirty-six people. A post office called "Sedalia" was established in 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1914. In 1899, a group of businessmen pooled their resources to purchase 4 lots on the east side of town from Fenton County for $2,000 cash; they named the lot "Everett". Everett became Sedalia's first incorporated municipality on July 1, 1902. On that date, Timothy Condon became its first Mayor and held that position until his resignation effective January 15 of 1903 due to financial difficulties caused by lack of taxes collected by the new municipality which he had helped to create; he had also served as its Treasurer from 1901-1903. The growth of Sedalia during this time was spurred by two factors: First were many small businesses brought about by the railroads coming through town; second were increased tourism opportunities resulting from an influx of people seeking out natural attractions (such as Laclede Falls) within minutes' driving distance of townspeople
