The Sedalia Municipal Airport was opened in 1936 by the Missouri National Guard. The airport was purchased by the Air Force in 1949 and became an airbase for the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing. It served as home to the 9th Fighter Squadron from 1951-1955, and also served as a depot for aircraft during the Korean War. In 1962, Sedalia Municipal Airport was renamed Keesler Field after General James E. Keesler, USAF Commander of Strategic Air Command's European Region. The 8th Tactical Fighter Wing moved out of Sedalia in 1965 and it closed its doors forever in 1969.
Sedalia is a town in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first white settlers in Sedalia were farmers who arrived around 1836. In 1854, Stonington Township was established and Sedalia became a part of that township. The first school for the town was built in 1856 by J.H. Baird and it operated until 1861 when a new school building was constructed on Academy Boulevard. The old school building still stands today and is used as a library branch. A post office was established at Sedalia in 1865 and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1870, two brothers named George Mueller founded the city of Springfield on the east side of the creek which flows through Sedaliatowns limits to the south-southwest. They selected this location because they thought it would be more prosperous than where they had settled earlier on their farm near present day based on their connections with Illinois and Ohio buildings located thereabouts at that time In 1872, $1,000 was raised by local women to purchase land east of Independence Avenue between Elm Street and Main Street to become what is now known as "Mueller Park." When completed, this park contained 23 acres (10 ha) including someuelie trees that have been preserved to this day- one of only three such parks remaining in all of Sedalia Township . It served as an open ground for public recreation until 1921 when land adjoining Mueller Park was donated by Judge John Payson to form "Payson Heights". This new park included playgrounds, tennis courts, racquetball courts etc., which remain popular features to this day . With over 1 million inhabitants living within its borders by 1910 (the population had reached 30000 by 1930), economic development started anew with downtown businesses starting up again such as grocery stores and breweries soon after World War I ceased hostilities . By 1945 downtown had regained much of its former glory with several high-rise buildings going up like US Steel's current skyscraper , State Farm Insurance's current tower , Post Office Square being filled with retail shops etcetera; however many residents left during the Great Depression leading to a decrease in population from 4500 upon fledging in 1932 down to 3000 within ten years During World War II Jedediah McCloskey enlisted soldiers from his home town - all men - into military service hereunder government contracts so that many families residing herejoined him overseas . After VE Day he organized a veterans group(Eighth Army Group)and led them back into town for dances and picnics before returning home on April 14th 1946 Upon his return most everyone decided then & there not invite him back especially since he didn't live long enough afterwards either ..... sedalians have always been proudest people thereabouts & will continue so even if we don't getinvited back often

Sedalia is a town in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Sedalia was John Ferguson in 1827. He and his family were reportedly the first to plant corn on the present-day site of Sedalia. In 1846, a group of men led by James Sennett established a farm west of town on land that had been donated by General Hernando Cephus Poston. The post office called itself "Postonville" from this time until it was discontinued in 1907. Postonville became part of Sedalia when it incorporated as a village in 1902. In 1906, voters passed a measure making Sedalia an all-white township; however, this portion of the community continued to be populated mostly by blacks until integration began officially in 1968 when white and black residents formed one integrated municipality known as "Sedalia Heights." The first store opened here in 1876, but it didn't keep up with growing demand for goods and services so it closed its doors within 2 years; however, another store opened up 3 years later (the current store) which continues to serve as the nucleus around which today's business activity orbits. A sawmill operated here until 1897 when ownership passed from father to son and finally to daughter before being purchased by Vail Paper Works who moved production back east into Kansas City where they kept it until 1984 when they closed down all their plants north of Interstate 35 because of pollution problems caused by their manufacturing process
