In 1845–46 James Purdy donated land west of Main Street for a new courthouse complex that would house the courts and jail; this addition made Rolla one of the largest towns in Missouri by far. In 1850–51 Daniel Jansen donated land along State Route 291 north to become what is now known as "Jansen's Grove." This addition gave Rolla an edge over neighboring Osage Bend because it lay within rolling prairies which offered opportunities for agriculture rather than development around town centers like those found in cities like Kansas City or Springfield-area neighborhoods such as Encino Park and Highland Park Finally, in 1865–66 Samuel Morse donated land east of Main Street to become what is now called Morse Place after his father-in-law Ezra Mound Morse Sr., who had also contributed money to help build Platte River Arsenal near present day Wichita Falls, Texas .
