Military gift history in Rolla, Missouri goes back to the early days of the United States. The first military gift to Rolla was a cannon from France in 1806. Captain James Waddell donated the cannon to the town and it still resides at the city hall today. Another early donation was a rifle from England in 1838. Captain Edward Hays gave Rolla their first riflerange. The range is still operational today and hosts events throughout the year. Additionally, Rolla received an artillery piece from Spain in 1861. This cannons were used by Union forces during the American Civil War and are now on display at Fort Stephenson National Historic Site in nearby Stilwell, Kansas. In 1865, Rolla received another artillery piece from Spain- this time for use by Union forces during The Battle of Chickamauga. This battle took place near present day Chattanooga, Tennessee and resulted in heavy losses for both sides involved. Today, part of Chickamauga Battlefield State Park is located withinRolla’s borders and offers visitor access to original Confederate army trenches as well as cannons dating back to that same era! During World War II, Rolla became one of seventeen towns across America which contributed troops for service in Europe (along with other locations such as Topeka and Shawnee). Rolla is a town in the United States. It is located in the St. Francois County, Missouri, region. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,819. Rolla was founded on April 6, 1836 by Colonel George Peele and his wife Maria Jourdain Peele as a post office called "Roland". The name Rolla honors General James Halleck who fought at Monterrey during the Mexican-American War. The first store in Rolla opened its doors in 1837 and was operated by John Aiken and his wife Francesca Aiken. In 1840, Reverend Moultrie Hardesty organized a Congregational church in Rolla which became one of the most influential churches inrolla until it closed its doors in 1969. The first school teaching English to children within rolla boundaries opened its doors on October 15th, 1841 when Mrs Elizabeth Gentry teaching 2nd grade taught students from Methodist Episcopal Church #1 which had been established about two miles away from where rolla now stands. In 1861, Mrs Mary Cockerill started teaching 3rd grade at White Sands School which served as Rollaa's only educational opportunity for white children until 1865 when an addition to White Sands School allowed African American students to attend as well . On January 20th of that year President Abraham Lincoln signing Proclamation No. 933 authorized Negroes residing within Missouri to register with their respective local registrars for voting purposes beginning February 4th inclusive; this event helped solidify African American residents within Rollaa into an identifiable community and forever changed their relationship with white society . From 1863-1868 all public schools were closed due to political unrest throughout the Union and many rollaanians lost access to education opportunities they would have otherwise enjoyed including Mr Elijah Bogan who became headmaster at White Sands School after Mr Lincoln's proclamation went into effect During World War I (1914-1918), Rollaa enlisted in various military services including serving as a city guard detachment known as Company K (later reorganized into Battalion C) attached to Company I (10th Infantry Regiment) 5th Brigade Combat Team Kansas National Guard Regimental Headquarters & Service Detachment - Kansas City MO Volunteer Infantry District headquartered at Topeka KS participated actively both before and after mobilization season 1917 began October 15 th 1918 through December 31st 1918 With full knowledge of impending Armistice our unit discharged without dishonor German Prisoners of War status on or about November 11 th 1918 At home over Christmas break we processed many thousands of decorations sent back from war zones Many members elected not return home after Armistice ended As America entered World War II (1939-1945), Rollaa again mobilized becoming part of Battle Squadron 8 First Air Force stationed out of St Louis MO participate components air raids against Hamburg Germany July 17 – August 24 1944 Operation Neptune Spear June 7 1945 following Invasion Normandy Normandy invasion fails resulting Truman Declaration Ordering all Army Air Forces Component Units To discontinue operations And Return Home September 2 nd 1945 Battle Squadron 8 returns home minus one aircraft Ohio Valley battle group commander Major General Curtis LeMay orders Battle Squadron 8 To withdraw All forces back behind Isreal Line effective September 16 th 1945 Aftermath millions dead total USAF losses: Unknown
