Rolla was founded in 1819 by James Rolla and his wife Sarah. The town was named for Rolla, a small village in France, which the Rollas went to visit on their honeymoon. The first settler in Rolla was Nicholas Cook. In 1828, the territorial government of Missouri created a township within Rolla Township specifically for Mormons. Joseph Smith, Jr., who had been jailed in Nauvoo, Illinois after being excommunicated from the LDS Church, moved to Rolla with his family in 1829 and began missionary work there. In 1830, rolla became known as the " Prophet's City." In 1846, when Missouri became an American state and slavery ended throughout most of North America, rolls were abolished along with all other personal property qualifications for voting. At that time only men could vote and women could not hold office or own land. Many Mormons who had owned land before immigrating to Missouri now lost it while others acquired it through purchase or inheritance during this time period. One particular bend in the river that served as a convenient point of landing for rafts ferrying goods downriver caused some problems for farmers as they tried to get their goods away from Nauvoo during winter months; this led to what is called the "Nauvoo Flood" which destroyed many homes and businesses around Nauvoo between December 31st- January 6th 1840. The following year (1847), Congress passed an act providing for complete removal of all slaves within three years after their owners' emancipation date (March 4th). This made Rolla one of the few towns east of Memphis without any slaves untilafter Union troops burned down several homes there on April 12th 1865 during Confederate retreat from Springfield Missouri
