Rolla was founded in 1836 as a small trading post on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The first Post Office was established in 1840 and was known as French Fort Rolla. In 1851, it became the seat of government for all of St. Louis County when Bellefontaine Township was organized from parts of Rolla and Vandalia townships. In 1861, Rolla became one of the original twenty-six townships in St. Louis County; it remained part of that county until 1898 when it joined with other adjoining counties to form the city of Saint Louis (renamed Rolla in 1903). Rolla, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Rolla is part of the Springfield-Springfield Valley metropolitan area. The rolla post office has been in operation since 1868. The first permanent settler in Rolla was Daniel Hebert and his family who arrived in 1838 from Illinois. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River near modern day I-270 and became known as "the Hardscrabble Setters." Daniel's son John married Sarah Jarrell (1805-1892) and they operated a ferry across the river until 1840 when they sold their business to Nicholas Prather (1784-1857). A large estate called Griggs Heights was acquired by Nicholas Prather and his wife Elizabeth Ingersoll Prather in 1849. They extensively landscaped it and named it Rolla for their daughter Mary Griggs (1801-1869). After Mary's death, her husband acquired additional land which he used for farming until 1864 when he sold it to James Aiken (1786-1866). In 1865, local farmers organized what became known as "The Farmers' Union" to resist high prices being offered by Memphis merchants for exports from Rolla. The new mill owners began building steamboats downriver and selling passengers tickets upstream to reach Memphis on these boats. This created an impetus for further development of Rolla with construction of a courthouse, schoolhouse, churches and other buildings beginning in 1870. During this time also Rolla began hosting annual fairs which attracted people from all over the state of Missouri including passengers on steamboats that crossed the river each year at various points downstream to visit our mills or purchase goods associated with those activities.. The fairgrounds were located west of town on current day Highway 53 south of Route 66 between Springdale Road and US 65 east of town.... [Griggs] Heights continued to be owned by descendants of original proprietors until it was conveyed to Township officials upon creation of Clay Township on May 15th 1907....... rolla post office opened October 25th 1870... With exception of World War II when many citizens enlisted in military service away from home, most residents have remained engaged with their community through its civic programs.....
