The Missouri Air National Guard's 1st Brigade Combat Team (1BCT) was activated on October 16, 1947 at Rolla Municipal Airport. The brigade consists of the 187th Fighter Wing and the 191st Fighter Wing. In 1949, the 1BCT was redesignated as the 67th Tactical Airlift Wing and in 1951 it became an attached unit to the 6th Tactical Airlift Group. In 1957, it became an independent wing and in 1959 it activated as a provisional combat group with headquarters at Springfield Municipal Airport. In 1962, the provisional combat group was transferred to Sioux City Municipal Airport and then to Rolla Municipal Airport where its headquarters were located until 1969 when they relocated to Macon Municipal Airport. From 1969-1973, 1BCT operated out of Chanute AFB UND while stationed at Beech Grove AFB IN before returning to Rolla in 1973. Since mobilization in 1947 there have been many changes within the Missouri Air National Guard including 2 brigades redesignated as wings/groups/ units; one being reassigned from another state; multiple squadrons moved within wings/ Groups/units between periods of activation or deactivation; numerous airlift assignments which have included both operational missions and aerial refueling capabilities; numerous unit deployments which have occurred during various military conflicts including Desert Storm (1990), Operation Neptune's Spear (1991), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003) and Afghanistan War (2014).

The Missouri Air National Guard's (MANG) Rolla-based 5th Wing has been providing air support for the Department of Defense since 1946. With more than 20,000 personnel and an aircraft fleet that includes over 100 military and civilian aircraft, the wing provides essential airlift services to US Strategic Command, US Central Command, multinational operations and other US defense missions.
