Republic, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of south-central Missouri. The population was 9,281 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield metropolitan area. Republic was founded in 1819 by Nicholas Democrat and his wife Nancy as a post office on a tract of land that had been ceded to them by John Jourdan, one of the original inhabitants of what would become Republic. The first postmaster was James Hogg, who served from 1821 to 1824. In 1830, Republic became an incorporated village under the name Washington. In 1836, it became part of Springfield when that city was organized from parts of three other towns: Holland (northwest corner), Peru (southwest corner), and Ottawa (east side). The first Republican Party meeting in Republic took place on January 27,1854. George Moulton Gray became its first official chairman. At its next meeting on February 12th, Alexander Shields was elected treasurer and Wm Bulfinch appointed clerk/typist. On May 1st Govtr Ewing resigned after being indicted for bribery in connection with the sale of arms to Mexico City; he was succeeded by David Crouch as governor. The Republic is a small town in Polk County, Missouri, United States. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1875 and named for the Roman Republic. The town is located on the banks of the Missouri River. Republic was one of several towns that were chartered by Kansas Territorial Legislature in order to improve river navigation and commerce between the two territories. Republic became a city in 1907 and adopted a charter from the Missouri General Assembly which granted it extraterritorial jurisdiction over all Indian Territory east of the Mississippi River. The city also had authority to regulate internal trade with other cities within its limits. In 1930, Republic merged with neighboring city of Independence to form a new municipality which retained extraterritorial jurisdiction over all Indian Territory east of the Mississippi River as well as over any territory annexed by either City during that time period (including parts of St Joseph County). In recent years, Republic has seen steady growth as an agricultural center due to its location on multiple rivers and its access to major markets such as St Louis and Kansas City. In 2017, it surpassed Independence as the most populous village in Polk County with 621 residents
