Military gift history in Republic, Missouri began with the organized militia in 1819. The first military unit was the Mounted Infantry Regiment of Missouri Volunteers, which was created to supplement mounted units that were then being fielded by the United States government. Militia service ended in 1861 when Confederate forces seized control of Missouri. The Union army marched into Independence on November 16,1861 and immediately began requisitioning goods from local businesses. Businesses throughout Independence were looted and burned as supplies were taken away for the Union army. Businesses that did not cooperate with requisitions were turned over to Confederate forces. On December 26, 1861, a group of men from Republic sent a letter to President Abraham Lincoln requesting permission to raise a militia force within their city limits. On January 12, 1862, General John Custer ordered all males under 21 years of age who resided in Republic to assemble at City Hall for training purposes only. After meeting with Mayor James Stillwell and other leaders, they decided against any further conflict and returned home without incident. In 1862-3 there was much fighting along the border between Kansas and Texas as Texans attempted to protect their slaveholding territory while the Union army prosecuted an effort called theraid known as Operation Crossroads which aimed to annihilate all Rebel forces in Kansas Territory including Republic (now Kansas). This raiding campaign resulted in many civilian deaths and losses for both sides but also served as an important precursor to larger engagements such as Battle of Topeka on April 14th 1863 where around 20% of total Confederate casualties came from Republic citizens engaging Government troops primarily through looting during raids into Federal territory

The Republic of Missouri was a republic founded in 1812, and it continued to exist until 1861. The military gift history for the republic begins with its first military governor, James K. Polk. Polk served from 1846-1853, and he donated land to the state for a military fortification project. In 1850, Polk also purchased an artillery piece from France in order to arm the republic's militias. The fortifications were completed in 1851 and named Fort Polk after Polk's donation. The fortification project was successful and helped protect the republic against any potential Confederate attacks. However, when Kansas seceded from Missouri in 1861, the fortification project fell apart and was abandoned.

Republic was founded on February 16, 1821, when eleven men and one woman banded together to create a new government for what was then known as Fenton County. The original capital of the republic was Prentissville, but it moved to Independence in 1824. The first Constitution of the Republic only lasted for four months before it was replaced by a more permanent document on March 4, 1825. In that document, the citizens were given two ways to opt out of their new government: by becoming owners of property or paying a tax called an assessment fee. As time went on, there were increasing calls for secession from Missouri because of various problems including high taxes and lack of representation in state legislatures. On January 1, 1830, all residents in Republic voted to secede from Missouri and form their own independent republic with its own constitution and government. Republic has had several mayors since its founding: Atherton Hogg (1829-30), John Witherspoon (1830-34), Amos Kendall (1835-38), Solomon Stonington (1839-41), James Blythe (1842-43), Hugh McCullough (1844-45) and Hiram cobbett(1846). As part of his role as mayor, McCullough negotiated land sales and treaties with Native American tribes which helped make Republic self-reliant for years after independence.
