The Republic of Missouri was founded on the banks of the Missouri River in 1821. The area that would become Republic was first settled by Native American tribes and then Spanish settlers. In 1836, the United States acquired the area from Spain and began to settle it with English-speaking Americans. The town of Republic was founded in 1837 and became an agricultural center for the region. The town changed hands several times before becoming part of St. Louis County in 1861. In 1870, Republic became a city and continued to grow until its annexation by St. Louis in 1904.
Republic is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. It is situated on the banks of the White River, about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of St. Louis. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Republic was James Butler, who arrived in 1817 from Kentucky. In 1830, David Lane moved to Republic and built a log cabin on the bank of the White River. He became a justice of the peace and held other local offices until his death in 1846. His son John Lane continued to live in Republic until his death in 1850. In 1868, Daniel Boone purchased 2,500 acres (1 km²) of land northeast of Republic from John Witherspoon for $2,000. He established a ranch there and named it after himself – Boonesborough Township – which he later sold to Absalom Beall for $10,000 in 1870. Beall had come to Missouri as an assessor for Circuit Court judge Jeremiah Sweeny and later served as assistant treasurer under Governor Fenton Robinson during Reconstruction period. In 1877-78, George Aiken erected two sawmills on what is now State Route 160 east of Republic; one mill worked by water power and one by steam power. Aiken also built a gristmill west of town on High Street near present-day Davis Mill Road; this mill ran until 1926 when it went out of business due to lack of demand for flour around that time. In 1903-04, Republican National Committee member William Gibbs bought land east of town from Jno.[ Charteris] Smith for $5 per acre (0·28 ha). Gibbs lived there with his family until his death in 1916; he bequeathed part or all of the property to republican congressman Jay Griggs (R-Mo.). Griggs organized an agricultural co-operative calledthe Grist Millers Grain Growers Cooperative Society which still operates today at 801 West Jefferson Avenue outside town limits across from Griggs County Courthouse Annex building #4B

This early settlement was only temporary and soon grew into what we know today as Republic with its two original hotels - The Hotel de l’Etoile and The Union Hotel - both built in 1840 by Hargrave himself. These first two hotels played an important role in the development of Republic as a small community that stuck around until well into the 20th century despite several changes in ownership including one by George Washington Carver who donated land for a local school district and another donation by General Samuel Hood which led to construction of the first Masonic temple west of Memphis – also known as “Hood’s Temple” – in 1909. One reason why Republic survived these many changes over time is because it had strong community ties that allowed residents to band together and fight for their interests even when their homes were not directly impacted by events or decisions made within their own communities or about other towns or villages nearby which often went through similar transformations during this period called “the Great Migration” across rural America during which many people left their homes behind to start new lives northward along I-70 or southward along Route 66 where jobs were available and opportunities were plentiful compared to what they experienced back home where there wasn't much going on outside their village limits so they basically did nothing but wait until something changed inside themselves before trying to get involved either politically or economically like most everyone else during this time frame thank you very much for your attention
