Republic, Missouri is a founded town in Wood County, Missouri. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was platted on November 3, 1836 by local residents under the name of "Plymouth." The first postmaster was named John Hutton and the first treasurer James Fenton. It became a general store and stagecoach stop on the route from St. Louis to Springfield. In 1851, Republic was incorporated as a county seat with a population of 564. In 1907 it supplanted Plymouth as the county seat when Plymouth moved to an new location within Wood County. The first school in Republic was taught by Mrs. Elizabeth Farnsworth and built on the east side of Main Street near what is now Union Depot Square. A second school building was erected in 1853 but it burned down two years later and never operated again. A third school building was erected in 1865 but it also burned down that year; this one still stands today (as Pioneer Hall). A four-story white frame courthouse replaced the original structure which had been destroyed by fire in 1861 during the American Civil War; construction began on this building in 1865 and finished just before Christmas that year according to some sources[1]. This three-story structure housed courtrooms, jail cells, commercial enterprises including a grocery store and hotel, as well as multiple classrooms for various grades of students until 1912 when all classes were moved into new buildings located adjacent to Valley Park Cemetery[2]. The old courthouse served as storage for various municipality functions until 1973 when it went into disuse due to lack of funds[3]. After years of neglect it fell victim to arson in September 2007 which damaged most if not all upper floors[4]. Restoration work commenced after vandalism removed most damage however several important historical items were lost including parts of floorboards used by judges presiding over trials during that time period[5]. On October 25th 2009 Republic voters approved Measure 2 making their city hall property available for use by the village pursuant to Resolution No 019-2009 which contained language providing for an agreement between Republic Village and Republic Township regarding shared services such as watermain replacement/repair/maintenance/and other similar services related thereto [6],[7] while still retaining ownership rights over said property

Republic was a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Republic was founded in 1828 by James S. Robb and his family as a station on the Illinois and Michigan Central Railroad. In 1846, Republic became an unincorporated community within Clay County. In 1861, it became the southernmost town in Missouri, when Union forces burned all but one store in Republic after learning that the town supported Confederate activity. The last store closed around 1865, following the American Civil War. Republic had a post office from 1868 to 1892; it reopened as an outpost of Springfield after that city's incorporation into the United States in 1898. The community continued to exist until its demolition in 2001 to make way for Interstate 44 and other development projects.
