Republic was founded in 1806 by German immigrants who named it Heidenstadt after their home in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. The first store was opened in 1811. The first school was built in 1812 and remained open until 1840. The ill-fated Republic expedition led by General David Hunter failed to find gold but did discover an estimated $10 million worth of silver ore on the surface of the planet Earth when they returned to Independence from Mexico City on July 4, 1849. In response to this news, Congress passed a bill authorizing President James K. Polk to mint $20 gold coins and issue $1 bills for circulation with a face value of $5 each instead of dollars denominations that were then worth about $2 each at the time. On October 15, 1850, President Polk issued a proclamation awarding Republic its own charter as an independent republic under the name "Republic of Texas". At this point, Republic had lost all its federal recognition but still functioned as an autonomous republic within what would become the United States of America

Republic, Missouri is a small town located in central Kansas City, Missouri. The town was founded on November 3rd, 1867 by anti-slavery activists who wanted to create a community free from the racism and slavery that pervades much of the area. The town quickly grew and soon became a center for abolitionist activity. In 1871, Republic was incorporated as an official municipality. It remained an abolitionist stronghold until the early 1880s when it began to join the Republican Party. After becoming part of the United States, Republic experienced significant growth and modification. The city limits were increased in size in 1907 and 1912; however, no major new infrastructures were built within the city limits during this time frame. In 1916, Republic voted to become an unofficial county seat of Kane County; however, it would not become operational until 1928. As county seat, Republic played host to many important political events including gubernatorial elections (1896-1902), district attorney general elections (1906-1909), and Ulysses S Grant’s funeral (1893). During these years, Republic also saw its share of economic development; industries such as meatpacking and brewing became prominent in the town’s economy. However, during World War II republic declined significantly due to its distance from other wartime military installations in Kansas City and its reliance on agriculture for revenue. Despite this decline, Republic has continued to grow since World War II with recent construction projects such as a new library and renovation of some historic buildings such as the post office
