Raytown is a small town in western Missouri, United States. The population was 1,758 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raytown–Vilas County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by German immigrants in 1871. It was named for George Washington Ray, an early settler and member of the Missouri House of Representatives from that state. Raytown became a ghost town after most of its residents left to move to larger towns during the Great Depression. However, a few locals returned to revive the community in the mid-20th century and it has since regained some of its former glory as a small town with strong cultural traditions. The first settlers in Raytown were farmers who came from Germany around 1871. They started out farming land that had been donated by Captain John Smedley, one of the founders of Vilas County. By 1881, all but two of the original settlers had died or moved away because there was no money available to continue farming afterCaptain Smedley's donation expired. In 1881, another group of Germans settled in what is now downtown Raytown and began cutting logs for lumberjacks working on local farms near Rock Island Dam upstream on the Missouri River. The new arrivals built their homes off logs they cut themselves and raised livestock until they could afford better grazing land farther upriver where they grew corn and wheat crops that produced surpluses which funded their stay until World War II when construction stopped on Rock Island Dam because the war got too expensive; however, Native Americans still used this spot for hunting purposes years later due to its strategic location between two major water crossings on both sides of the river). In 1902, three brothers - Carl W., Julius E., and Wiley Pohl - bought 640 acres (2 km2) northwest of downtown Raytown from Captain John Smedley for $5 per acre ($60 total). This area now includes much older neighborhoods such as Becker Park downriver from downtown along I-435 and Elm Street east across Old Highway 24 south into rural farmland called Hinsdale until it meets US-61 just north of Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery; these areas were also once inhabited by Germans who had come overland during wagon trains brought over by Jesse James during his raid on Santa Fe Railroad Depot back in 1865; today's Becker Park borders Hollandale Cemetery at its eastern edge just beyond US-61 when traveling eastbound onto I-435 from US-61 (the old Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery lies west side facing I-435). After purchasing 640 acres (2 km2), Wiley Pohl built what is today known as First Baptist Church which served as a meeting place for various German farmers living around him before becoming home to many people who would later become involved with organized religion including: Reverend Alpheus Robertson beginning services in 1906; Pastor Harry Weisinger officiating at services beginning 1911; Drue Schneider Congregational minister presiding over First Baptist Church congregation beginning 1916 while Doc Severin Berger officiating at services starting 1922; Revd Jens Opsahl pastor presiding over Second Baptist Church congregation begining 1934 while Revd Harry Weisinger officiates at services starting 1935}; Hermann Boehm pastor presiding over Lutheran congregation starting 1936 while Revd Harry Weisinger officiates during weekly church service beginning 1937}; William Bechtel Sr.- Fredrick Bechtel Jr.-Walter Bechtel owner/operator Claymore Coal Company located adjacent to Miners Hill Road about one mile northeast corner lot line thence across road lots line into Township limits adjoining Jefferson City

Raytown was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk as a military outpost on the Arkansas River. It became a small town after the American Civil War, and grew rapidly during Reconstruction. In 1875, it became a city and remains one of Missouri's most populous towns today. The first settler in Raytown was John H. Best, who arrived in 1836 from Kentucky. Best named his town for his home state, Virginia. After the war, Best moved his family to Raytown and started a grocery store there. The Best grocery business thrived until 1906 when it went out of business due to consolidation among local grocery stores in Raytown's early years. In 1875, Raytown became an incorporated city under the leadership of Mayor Jno Pyle and City Councilman Rufus Ewing Jr.. The city's growth led to its first schoolhouse being built in 1870 on what is now Main Street. That same year saw the opening of the city's first restaurant - called "The Tavern" - at Fourth and Elm Streets. Raystown soon boasted several other businesses that made it an important commercial center for residents across the state: a hardware store on Third Street; a bakery on Elm Street; two banks - State Bank and First National Bank - on Second Street; four hotels including one that featured Art Nouveau architecture; three churches (the Methodist Church, Byzantine Catholic Church, Presbyterian Church); two stores - One Stop groceries & Clothing/Fashion Store and Mrs.'s Grocery & Clothing - along with dozens of homes (mostly single-family residences). During its heyday as an industrial center during Reconstruction, Raytown produced cotton ginners, locomotive builders (including two firms associated with George Stephenson), carpenters (one firm building rails for Union Pacific Railroad), bootsmiths (building shoes for soldiers during the Civil War) and other manufacturing jobs that helped support rayons such as asbestos clothiers and manufacturers of copper wire products.'Bibliography/Raystown-Mo.'
