The Raytown National Guard was organized on February 16, 1861. It was the first national guard unit in the United States. The Raytown National Guard was disbanded on July 10, 1865. The Raytown National Guard was organized with a mission to protect the citizens of Missouri from invasion by any foreign power. The Republic of Texas had invaded Missouri in 1836 and Jay Cooke had given orders for the Raytown National Guard to protect the citizens of his state. The first active duty members of the Raytown National Guard were recruited from local farmers and mechanics who were mobilized for two weeks during April 1861. After mobilization, many men served for three years or more before being discharged because they could not be expected to remain at home when war broke out. When war did break out, men from all over Missouri responded to military callups as part of General James K. Polk’s Volunteer Army. On August 11, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called up 1,000 soldiers from Illinois and Indiana into service under General David Hunter’s command at Cairo, Illinois Territory]. These troops numbered only 20% of total Ulysses S Grant’s forces arrayed against Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House twenty miles away in Virginia.] Although outnumbered 3-1 by Confederate forces (15% cavalry vs 75% infantry) Grant decided that he would fight a pitched battle rather than retreat after learning about Confederate reinforcements marching towards Petersburg.] Assembling his army around Petersburg he ordered his subordinate commanders to march eastward across Potomac River just outside Washington D C so that if attacked Union troops would cross over into Maryland instead of fighting their way back across their own state lines.] Union commanders realized this order was an bluff and abandoned it when they received word that Confederate generals Grant and Beauregard were advancing parallel to each other] After learning this news Union Major General Benjamin Butler cancelled all remaining military engagements in Virginia] By September 4th most Southern armies had crossed over into Maryland]] Union soldiers encountered heavy resistance as they started withdrawing south along Route 9A towards Winchester ]On October 14th Union troops reached present day Winchester where they discovered Confederates retreating through Middlesex County]] This event is also known as “The Battle Of Winchester” after its location within town limits today

Raytown is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raytown–Ozark Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Raytown was Amos Hixon in 1819. The village was platted in 1834, and became a city in 1905. The name came from General James K. Polk's famous speech "The Pathfinder" at which he announced his candidacy for president on November 3, 1845, but died before election day due to yellow fever. Raytown has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years. A major earthworks discovered near Raytown during excavations for the University of Missouri–Kansas City were erected by the Osage people around 1800-1810 as part of their effort to resist European intrusion into their territory. In 1818, when Missouri became a state, its capital was moved from Nauvoo to Columbia so that it could be closer to Washington Territory then being controlled by east Tennessee circuit judge Samuel Blount and fur trader John Cargill; this caused friction between Nauvoo and Columbia residents because Blount chose to locate Columbia on what would become landowning families' valuable farmland while many people living north of Nauvoo wanted nothing to do with Illinois politics and felt like they had lost their independence within the new country. In retaliation for this insult, individuals from both cities took up arms against each other until peace was restored after President James K Polk met with representatives from both cities on March 6th, 1820 at Carthage Plantation outside Springfield where he authorized an inquiry into the matter and proposed that all proper measures be taken to prevent future outbreaks between these two communitieslestotheextensionofthe United States Congress). This event paved way for early settler development in what would become Raytown including such notable pioneers as Drury (1829-1911), Fenton (1830-1920), Moberly (1835-1925), Bancroft (1839-1920) and Birdie ( 1830-1900). This physical separation – even though still amajor elementofnativeamericanlife – allowed nonresidential Germans who had located near Columbia or Kansas City during those days prior to 1880 accessto education opportunities here while also allowing anglophile Missourians some measureof cultural insulation should they choose not reside within Nauvoo limits; also helping contribute tobuilda strong German community which continued unabated longafter America's entry into World War I . The name of the town changed to Raystown on October 6, 1880, when it became part of Jackson County. On April 24, 1889, the community had a school which taught children from 3 to 14 years old. On March 16, 1896 the first railroad arrived in Raytown and connected it with Columbia City across the Arkansas River; this made Raytown an important community for transportation and commerce. In 1907 Artemas Dunn opened his grocery store in Raytown which became one of America's largest grocery stores during that time period In 1909 Drayson & Company began manufacturing tooth brushes under their name here at their factory until they discontinued operations in 1958 In 1912 Wm Kapp started up his gas station next to Artemas Dunn's store That same year also saw construction begin on what would become known as "The Old Mill" which stood until 1965 when it was destroyed by fire
