Military gift history in Raytown, Missouri goes back to the early 1800s. The town was founded by a group of farmers and their families who moved from Kentucky to found what is now Raytown in 1819. The first military unit to visit Raytown was the 9th Infantry Regiment which arrived in 1821. In 1830, the 3rd Missouri Volunteer Cavalry Regiment also visited from Missouri. In 1835, a detachment of the 11th Infantry Regiment arrived and served for two years before being disbanded. In 1849, General Ulysses S. Grant army invaded Kansas and took over most of that state including Raytown. For three years, General Grant's troops garrisoned the town as part of their campaign to conquer Kansas. In September 1861, after Confederate forces surrendered at Vicksburg, Union troops began withdrawn from Kansas but left behind a garrison of about 1,000 men inRaytown- almost all of whom were eventually mustered out or discharged within a few months due to health problems related to service in the war). In 1865, following the end of Reconstruction in America, organized militias began forming throughout much of the South resulting in increased violence and tension between white supremacists and black militants known as "The Redeemer's Army." On July 20th 1870 an order was given by President Ulysses S. Grant ordering all African American males over 21 years old living within 10 miles of Philadelphia City Hall rounded up and transported into that city without trial or any form ofizenfare for transport purposes- this became known as "The Radicals' Raid". About 350 people were arrested with only 27 being released alive (the rest were executed). Many residents fled ahead of the raid while others hid inside homes until it ended when they heard gunshots outside. Many businesses closed during this time as there was no food or opportunity available aside from selling munitions made from local cotton fields which had been confiscated by Union soldiers during The Radicals' Raid. Afterward many residents returned home but some opted not to return because they felt like they had lost everything they had worked for during Reconstruction era- something that would later resurface with protests against new development near downtown Raytown such as ATTractions World Trade Center located on former railroad property currently called Terminal Park.).
