The first post office was established in 1838, and the community began to develop as a agricultural center due to its location at the junction of two major wagon routes. In 1840, it became the county seat of Clay County; and although it retained that status until 1907 when Springfield became the county seat again, Raytown continued to be an important rural center until after World War II when more significant population changes occurred in Clay County. In 1968, Raytowns merged with neighboring towns of Libertyville and South Holland to form what is now known as "The Villages". At that time homes were no longer built on farms but instead were developed into singlewide residences characteristic of suburban living patterns then prevalent across much of America. Raytown is a small town in Marshall County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield- Raytown-Plymouth, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1867 by General C.F. Smith and his family. The first post office was established in 1868 (the name may have been "Shawnee"). In 1870, the community had a population of 50 residents and an isolated road led to it from nearby Springfield. A large sawmill built on the creek near present day Raytown gave rise to its nickname "Sawyer's Mill". In 1875, General John Tipton sold land adjoining Raytown for $8 per acre to Jno Hayshaw of Carthage Township for use as a village site and millrace. On December 8, 1875, the formal dedication of the Village occurred with Mayor James Murdock serving as speaker. The millrace became known as Hayshaw's Creek because it flowed through hisown property bisecting Raytown before entering Marshall County beyond Clay City limits). In 1886 local farmer George Hebard donated land east ofpresent day Raytown for an agricultural college which would become University of Missouri at Columbia; this gift made possible early economic development in what is now southern Marshall County without having to move away from their home town or bankside farmsteads where they had lived since pioneer times! With war over came scarce dollars which meant less demand for new housing so developers set their sights higher; within 5 years much increased housing stock had been erected all around town including nearly 100 homes on lot 15 north side Railroad Ave just west Of Administration Building! Development continued apace following World War II with more schools and businesses built along arterial streets throughout downtown Sharon Springs area until finally most notably with annexations of other nearby towns during postwar period resulting in comprehensive annexation OF MUCH OF THE STRONGEST KANSAS CITY AREA!! By 1960 only 2% remained OF THE ACTUAL Population...this loss however has been somewhat compensated thru recent influxesOF NEWResidents INTO THE COMMUNITY FROM OTHER areas!!!Raystown remains one!"
