Raytown is located in Clinton County, Missouri, on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town was founded in 1873 by John Ray and his wife Annabelle. It became a city in 1904 and a county seat in 1907. The population of Raytown was 17,814 at the 2010 census. TheRaytown community is named after John Ray, who founded it in 1873. The town was originally called Blue Springs because of the blue dye that was used to produce clothing there. In 1902, the name was changed to honor General James K. Polk as part of a larger naming campaign for post offices throughout Missouri. The general’s portrait still hangs inside the Raytown courthouse. John Ray died in 1888 and Annabelle married him two years later. They had six children: four boys and two girls. After John's death, Annabelle took over management of their home country estate and continued to live there until her death in 1943; she bequeathed it to her son-in-law Raymond Travers Jr.. In 1904, Raystown merged with nearby White Sands to form one municipality under the name White Sands City Limits Municipal District No 3 (WSCLD 3). On December 1, 1907, WSCLD 3 became an independent municipality under its own government when all other municipalities within Clinton County were annexed into Jackson County during that year's consolidation process managed by the Kansas Department of Local Affairs pursuant to Order No . 9562 from Governor George Riley.. In 1934, following Pulaski County's annexation into Jackson County., Raymond Travers Jr.'s father purchased most of what remained of White Sands City Limits Municipal District No 3 which included much of what is now Raytown including parts of White Sands Cemetery which he operated as a private cemetery until his death in 1944.. In 1945 local voters passed an ordinance providing for township constitutions which created raytown Township.. On February 2nd 1946 election officials announced that voting results showed that raystown had received 531 votes against only 30 cast forJacksonville Township which would have formed Pulaski County's new municipal government had it not been for errors made by local officials during earlier counting procedures.. Consequently raytown Township residents successfully petitioned state leaders to create a new Pulaski County government with their township constitutions having already been ratified by referendum prior to this announcement .. finally on November 15th 1948 Govind Riley signed legislation creating Pulaski County as its official name effective immediately... As part-of this effort raytown Township officially adopted its current name on October 2nd 1949 when land east of US Highway 24 near present day Maple Lawn were acquired and developed into what is now known as downtownRaytown while large blocks west side remain undeveloped today

Raytown is a small town in Ray County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Raytown was Enoch Pratt. He and his family arrived on May 10, 1834, and set up a cabin on the edge of what is now the town square. The community name originated with John Ray who purchased land in 1835 from George Rappahannock for $200. In 1836, James Fenton erected the first store in Raytown. By 1840, there were ten stores and twenty-eight residents in Raytown. In 1847 Henry Jernigan founded a grist mill in town which became one of the largest flour mills in America. A post office was established at Raytown in 1850; it continued to serve until 1907. In 1865 Union General Nathaniel Banks marched through Raysboro on his way to battle at Pea Ridge during the American Civil War and stopped at the local courthouse to take possession of military supplies that had been stored there since before that war started. Afterward many soldiers stayed at this location for months or years as they awaited transport back home across state lines to be tried for treason or other crimes committed during the warring factions' conflict (the so-called "transportation crisis"). Raytown's most famous resident may have been Drs Jesse James and Tommy Atkins who lived here from 1889 until their arrests three years later during an attempt by US Marshal Samuel Tilden to interdict their train while crossing into Missouri from Illinois
