Raytown is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 707 at the 2000 census. It lies south of Independence and west of Fort Scott. Raytown is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Raytown was John White in 1837. He and his family were the first white people to live there when they moved from Indiana. The early settlers were farmers with some cattle and horse operation but it was not until after World War II that Raytown became a major bedroom community for Kansas City. In 1957, Raytown had its charter as an incorporated town and has since grown rapidly due to its location and easy access to Interstate 65 and other businesses in the KCMO area. Today, much of what made Raytown so successful has been lost or changed over time: most notably, its reliance on I-65 which has taken away many jobs including transportation for many residents; however, even with this decline, Raytown still remains one of KCMO's fastest-growing communities with an expanding economy that employs more than 1,000 people local and national (including 300+ students). Heres why: 1) It's located just outside KCMO on I-65 - making it easily accessible for workers who need to get into town quickly 2) Its wealth of educational opportunities - from public schools through colleges such as Missouri State University to private academies 3) Its growing population - which along with job growth has led to housing prices increasing dramatically over the years
