The United States Air Force deployed a gift history in Raytown, Missouri on October 3, 2017. The air force presented a plaque to the town's municipal building in honor of Lt. Col. James W. Hennessey who served as the first military chaplain for the USAF from 1967-1978 and retired in 1992 after 37 years of service. The plaque reads: "Lt. Col James W Hennessey - Chaplain for USAF from 1967-1978"

In 1984, the Missouri Air National Guard deployed a gift shop to Raytown AFB. The store was originally called "The Gift Shop of the Missouri Air National Guard." It served as a base-wide sales and service depot for military personnel and their families. In 2006, the store was renamed the AAFES Gift Shop in honor of then-Air Force Chief Master Sergeant John F. "Hank" Beal III.
Raytown is located in Clay County, Missouri, and it is the smallest of the five towns in the town of Raytown. The population was 3,898 at the 2000 census. The first inhabitants of what is now Raytown were a group of Shawnee Indians who lived on the riverbank near where present-day I-435 crosses over from Illinois to Missouri. The Shawnees left around 1772 when they were driven out by white man settlers. In 1831, Isaac Goodnow founded a small mill in what is now Raytown and named it after his home town of Raystown, Pennsylvania. Goodnow had been born there in 1789. In 1835, Goodnow's son Byram bought land east of present day I-435 and built a house called "The Grange". This house stands to this day as one of only two remaining buildings in Raytown that were built before 1840. In addition to its small size, Raytown also has some unique features which make it stand out from other smaller towns in Clay County: 1) It has no post office; instead, residents mail their letters directly to their friends and family members inside their homes 2) There are no stores or businesses within walking distance ; instead, residents rely heavily on farm products and services for basic needs such as food stamps and health care

Raytown was founded in 1836 by John Charles Ray and his wife, Lydia. The town was named after the Ray family's farm that once stood there. The town quickly became a center of trade and industry, with a large foundry, several mills, and a gristmill all located in its early days. In the late 1800s, Raytown saw an influx of immigrants from Ireland and other parts of Europe who brought their skills and cultures to Raytown. The town also experienced growth in the agricultural sector as farmers developed new methods for raising crops such as irrigation systems and synthetic fertilizers. By the 1920s, Raytown had become one of Missouri's most important industrial towns. It was home to two major industries: rayon fiber production (the first factory in Missouri) and auto manufacturing (the biggest employer in town until it closed down in the 1970s). Today,Raytown is known for its small-scale architecture – many homes are built without any professional architects or builders on hand – as well as its wide variety of shopping options available around its central square.
