Raymore is a small town in Kansas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shawnee Mission Peninsula Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Raymore was first settled in 1834 by Honorable John A. Ray and his family. They were farmers and ranchers who cultivated corn, beans, potatoes, and oats on their large lots near present-day Interstate 70 and Highway 65. The land gifts from John's father had brought about this development; much of what is now Raymore was originally part of Lawrence Township east of Topeka. In 1875, James Hickey bought some parcels of land from the Ralston brothers to establish the city of Raymore on what are today Main Street and Second Avenue NE., which became its central business district (CBD). In 1886, when store owners Jerald Pugh and George Dunkerley built a two-story building on First Avenue NW., they named it the "Hickey Building." In 1895, when local attorney Wm. Ewing bought property adjacent to Hickey's CBD for $5 per acre (the current site of Old Main), he began developing it into what is today called the "Ewing Business District". By 1907 there were 20 businesses in this district alone! When World War I started in 1914and although most people lived within easy driving distance for supplies or services during those years due largely to transportation improvements then being made such as interstates 25 and 90 (now I-70), many residents decided not to participate because they felt their homes would be destroyed if war came aluminum income

Raymore was founded in 1837 by John Ray and his brother James. The town was named after the Ray family's home in Ireland. In 1852, the town became a post office and had its first school. In 1865, the population of Raymore grew to over 100 people and it incorporated as a city. On April 1, 1872, Raymore became a part of the Illinois statehood movement and on December 4, 1872, it received its charter from the General Assembly of Illinois. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1880s and early 1900s due to its rich agricultural history and heavy industry; however, by World War I the economy had begun to decline due to technological advances. By 1920-1921 the population had fallen below 300 people and Raymondville replaced it as their primary economic center. However, in 1927-28 Raymondville merged with Raymore to form a new city called "Raymore-Stroudsburg".
