Poplar Bluff is a town in Dunkirk Township, Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1839 by General James K. Polk and his family. Poplar Bluff became a village in 1872. The first settler in Poplar Bluff was John Capps who arrived in 1839. He built a log cabin on the east side of the creek near present day Highway 30 and State Highway 9. A few years later he erected a more permanent house on the same location where it remains to this day. In 1847 Isaac Fenton moved to Poplar Bluff from Weimar and began farming hereabouts. In 1850 he married Sarah Henson and they did some further farming until their death in 1865. Their son Amos Fenton took over the farm after their deaths and continued to operate it until 1912 when it passed into private hands again. A post office called Poplar Bluff was established at this site on April 14, 1840, but no mail ever reached its subscribers there because of distance issues between Dunkirk and Cairo, Illinois then part of Stonington Township; however, letters were received at the now defunct Cairo post office from residents in nearby communities such as Springfield and Carthage well into 1862! In 1846 General James K Polk moved his family from Council Grove, Illinois to Dunkirk Township for health reasons only to find that land grants had not yet been issued for that township so he put up signboard reading "George Washington's Mount Rushmore". On July 4th of that year he donated land worth $1 per acre (or $100 total) just east of what is now Main Street to establish "George Washington's Mount Rushmore National Monument" which still stands today! George Washington himself would have attended inauguration ceremonies had he lived in America at that time! However due largely to American railroads development during this time much of the originalMount Rushmore landscape has changed hands multiple times among various developers... including being re-erected along with other national monuments like Mount Rushmore National Memorial off I-435 just outside St Louis recently! An interesting footnote about this particular donation is that while George Washington himself would have attended inaugurations (and likely enjoyed refreshments!) if living within America at the time said events occurred - his tomb actually sits atop an existing building located behind Independence Hall inside Philadelphia's historic University City neighborhood - thus providing yet another example demonstrating just how quickly things can changeinMissouri during these days... especially when center stage seems almost alwaysOccupied by Dads!"
