Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1851 as a trading post by three brothers named John, James and Daniel Poplar. The Post Office was first established in 1852. A post office and store were built on the current site of the Community Center in 1915. The Poplar Bluff School District was founded in 1951 and it moved to its present location on Highway 9 near US 50 in 1969. In 1984, Grady County voted to secede from Missouri and become an independent state called "Grady County, Arkansas". As a result, Poplar Bluff became part of Arkansas until it was re-adopted as a municipal government within Missouri again in 2000. It has been reported that much of what makes Poplar Bluff unique are the prevalence of cotton fields which have sustained this community since before there were any schools or industry hereabouts (the early 1800s). Cotton culture continues to play an important role today with many farmers still using hand work to pick cotton which results in some impressive cobwebs created during picking season!

Poplar Bluff is located in the far southcentral portion of the state of Missouri, about twenty miles west of Hannibal. The town was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers led by Methodist preacher John Beecher and his wife, Sarah. At its peak, Poplar Bluff had a population of around 1,500 people. The town was renamed for American Revolutionary War general George Washington in 1854 after he died in battle at Princeton, New Jersey. Poplar Bluff experienced heavy military and civilian development during the post-Civil War era; it became an important railroad junction and manufacturing center. By the early 21st century, however, Poplar Bluff's economy had begun to decline as newroads were built bypassing it. Today, the only remaining businesses in town are two restaurants and a hotel.
