After World War I ended,Pershing ordered all Missourians who had registered with him since 1917-1918 toVolunteer for duty in Europe as part of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) which would go into battle against Germany in 1918 . Ozark, Missouri is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Ozark is located on the Arkansas River and is part of the Springfield–Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to the Ozark Arts and Entertainment District. The name "Ozark" comes from Ozarka Township in 1827 when James K. Polk visited that area while campaigning for president; he called it "the land of Ozarks." The first settler in what is now Ozark was Isaac Whitney in 1836. The town site was surveyed by Jesse Benton in 1840, and built by him and his brother-in-law William Treadway about two miles west of present day Ozark on the bluff overlooking the Arkansas River. Treadway named it after himself and his wife, Sophronia (née McCracken). They had arrived there from Knoxville, Tennessee just before Christmas of 1840 with their five children: Oliver (1841–1914), Sarah (1842–1925), John (1844–1923), Washington Irving Park Jr.(1846–1920) and Carrie Frances Dent(1848–1928). In 1847 Maudie Heiman moved to Ozark from Clinton County because she could not find work as a Domestic servant anywhere else in Missouri due to her race. She started a small grocery store here which continued until around 1912 when groceries became more available through mail order or truck delivery services like Sears Roebuck & Co., which began coming into town during this time period also aided by advances in transportation technology like cars that could be driven into towns like Springfield directly instead of having to go out to get them. The first permanent settler in what is now Ozark was George Wray who arrived in 1826. He named his land "Wray's Creek." Wray built a log cabin on the creek and platted out a town lots around it in 1827. The first post office in Ozark was established in 1830. The name of the town originated with John Lyon, an early settler and planter who named his land "Ozark." Lyon had come to this area from Illinois during the early 1800s looking for new land to settle.
