The Overland Rifle Club has been in existence since 1892. The club was organized to provide a place for men to shoot rifles and pistols. In 1916 the club moved from its original location off of Harper Street in downtown Overland to a building on Fourth Street. In 1934, the club bought a rifle range at 4500 North Missouri Avenue in Overland. The range was used until it closed in 1967 due to financial reasons.
Overland, Missouri is a small town in northwest Kansas City County. The population was 1,951 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 as a result of the Santa Fe Railroad's construction of a line from Topeka to Wichita. In 1902, Overland became one of five towns along that railroad's new Pacific Extension which connected Wichita and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The extension allowed for an increase in freight traffic and required the relocation of many residents from eastern Shawnee County to provide enough space for the growth. In 1907, Overland incorporated as a village under the name "Ogden". That name lasted until it was changed to "Overland" in 1921 when it became one of five towns along the newly created Kansas City Railway lines connecting Wichita and KCMO-Kansas City. Overland, Missouri is a small town in Bollinger County, Missouri, United States. The population was 591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Independence city-county government. The town was founded in 1857 by John D. Overington and named for the overland mail route that ran through it. The first post office in Overland was established on July 2, 1857, and served until May 15, 1861. In 1865, Overlington acquired land from Wm Vail to form the townsite of Overland Park. The first store in Overland opened on October 22, 1865. A cotton gin was built in 1870 and operated until 1916; it remains a local landmark today. In 1902, the Kansas Pacific Railroad donated land for a new station at Overland Park; this became known as the "Overlander Station" after its donation date. The town continued to grow rapidly with annexations from other nearby towns during the next several decades; by 1950 there were 11 settlements within 1 mile (1 km) of OverLAND PARK! In 1964, Bollinger County voters passed an ordinance creating an incorporated village within the county limits called Independence; On December 10th of that year officials announced thatOVERLAND had reached 1000 residents! This rapid growth has continued to this day with OVERLAND now boasting a total population of 1253 as of 2009!
