Overland, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of the United States. The population was 3,483 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Township, and the Springfield-Springfield School District. The first recorded settlement in Overland was on a farmstead called "Hillsborough" by David Wilkinson in 1820. The second known location was on a estate called "Natchez" by General John Custer in 1828. Daniel Boone's entries for 1796 and 1800 list Overland as being within present-day Greene County. A post office called Overland existed from 1836 to 1860. In 1840, John Wesley Powell visited Overland and wrote about it in his book "The Great American Expedition." In 1860, George Armstrong Custer fought at Battle of Little Bighorn and died there during the engagement; his body was brought back to Union City where it was buried with full military honors. For many years after his death, Union City refused to bury him because he had been an Indian fighter rather than a soldier fighting for the United States Army under General Ulysses S. Grant. In 1896, local residents organized a committee to try to get Union City to change its position and allow burial of Custer there until further notice. After much discussion and debate, Union City eventually changed its mind and buried him alongside other veterans nearby in 1903. In 1925, over 60% of OverLAND residents were farmers; however industry began becoming more prevalent as well starting around World War II when utilities began expanding into this area due to steel production growing rapidly in Missouri Valley region (now Kentucky). This led to increased business opportunities for businesses that relied on access to water supplies or transportation links outside of OverLAND townsfolk’s neighborhoods; these include such companies as Monsanto Chemical Company (now Bayer), Phelps Dodge Oil Company (now Phillips Petroleum), McCormick & Co., Archer Daniels Midstream Corporation (later Anadarko Petroleum) etc.. With this increase came an increase number of jobs that came with new housing developments along Interstate 70 which paralleled river valleys providing easy access both upstream and downstream from chemical plants/ industrial sites used for processing water supplies or generating electric power downstream from those same sites - all across what is now Kansas but back then included parts of Illinois, Indiana & Ohio! employing thousands directly or indirectly during these years between I-70 development projects adjacent Midwest cities including St Louis et al.. These days one would find communities like Topeka & Wichita KS just east off I-70 near Shawnee Mission OK about 12 miles south eastof Kansas city limits while still others are located Owensboro KY southeast off I-75 just past Lebanon PA border about 20 minutes west northwestof Pittsburgh PA limits facing northeastern Ohio River valley etc.. Overland, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The population was 2,829 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was established in 1858 by General Nathaniel Lyon and his force from Arkansas when he discovered gold near what is now Overland. The town served as an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail until Indian Removal began in 1830. A post office was established at Overland in 1859, and remained in operation until it closed in 1930. The first store opened in 1865. In 1870, a sawmill was built and became one of the most important businesses in Overland. The mill continued to be active until it closed in 1964. The first school opened west of Overland on July 1, 1861; it continued to operate until it closed in 1966 due to low enrollment. In 1863, a Methodist church was built north of Overland; it operated until 1970 when it burned down and its congregation moved to nearby Libertyville. A new Methodist church was built south of Overland between 1969 and 1971; it continues to function today as a worship center for over 50 local churches. In 1875-76, work began on building a road from Springfield to OverLAND through what is now Cherokee County; construction stopped due to lack of funds but resumed later that year under new leadership with successful results.. When completed, this road became known as "the Great Road" because much progress had been made so quickly within such short time frame despite some obstacles such as malaria-carrying mosquitoes which were difficult to fight off without using chemical methods (Fowler). In 1886-87 more construction occurred on the road with completion achieved two years later making OVERLAND THE MOST CONNECTED CITY IN MISSOURI (Dorman). Although there were some negative effects arising out of this movement including increased crime rates (such as prostitution) locals soon came up with ideas for improving things like drainage systems which has resulted into today’s layout where OVERLAND IS ONE OF THE SMALLEST COMMUNITIES IN MISSOURI WITH HIGH SCHOOLS AND MEDICAL FACILITIES BEING LOCATED NEAR EVERY HOME (Wright).
